Viqueens keep Hawks under control

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

HAMPSHIRE -- Heather Small gave the Viqueens a quick lead with a 3-pointer that barely tickled the net just 40 seconds into the game and she and her teammates never looked back as they led from start to finish to defeat Hampshire's Lady Hawks 53-44 Monday night.

Sophomore Kassidy Lane contributed five points from the post to help the visitors establish a 14-9 margin after one quarter.

Point guard Aubrey Boyce and Megan Busbee joined the offensive fray with eight points between them and the Viqueen defense asserted itself by allowing just four baskets in the second frame, though the Lady Hawks did manage to get to the foul line on nine occasions to stay within 33-21 at intermission.

"We came out and played with some confidence offensively for the first time in what seems to be a long time," Viqueen coach Allison Layne said. "As good as we looked on that side of the ball, we were just the opposite on defense.

"I am very concerned that we appeared to just go through the motions defensively and let this team hang around way too long because we weren't moving our feet or fighting for good position under the boards when the ball was in the air.

"We talked about coming out with a different mindset in the second half and we responded fairly well."

Small, Jessica Thompson and Courtney Vassar turned up the heat considerably as they pressed Hampshire into numerous turnovers while their ballhandlers wilted under the pressure.

Community took full advantage on the other side of the court as five different players got in on the act offensively. Leslie Murphy's 3-pointer from deep in the corner was the highlight as the Viqueens led 44-29 going into the fourth stanza.

Layne auditioned her bench players for the final eight minutes.

"Any win is a good win, but we still have a lot of work to do fundamentally," Layne said. "We gave up a lot of easy points and we didn't rebound the ball very well despite having a distinct size advantage in the game.

"We still tend to be too up and down depending on who our opponent is and that is not a desirable quality for any team.

"We are still a very young team, but we have to learn consistency on a game by game basis. Until then, we will just continue to be a team that no one knows what to expect from on any given night."

Small and Lane earned game-high honors with 11 apiece for Community.

Kayla Lemire tossed in nine for the Lady Hawks.
