More than 1,800 early vote in primary

Saturday, February 2, 2008

A total of 1,804 people participated in the early vote period for Tuesday's primary elections, including 1,680 in person at the courthouse and another 124 who voted by mail or at nursing homes, according to Bedford County election administrator Summer Leverette.

Early voting ended Thursday.

Leverette said the turnout was "about average" for the primary during a presidential election year.

Tuesday's election will include both Democratic and Republican presidential primaries, as well as a Democratic primary for two county-wide offices. The local Republican party did not request a primary, and in fact the two incumbents running in the Democratic primary -- Highway Superintendent Stanley Smotherman and Assessor of Property Ronda Clanton -- are unopposed.

Because the deadline for changing the ballot is long past, the presidential primary ballots for both parties include a number of candidates who have dropped out of the race, or at least stopped active campaigning.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton, Mike Gravel and Barack Obama are still active as of press time, while Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich and Bill Richardson are on the ballot but no longer active candidates.

On the Republican site, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are still active, while Rudy Giuliani, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, Tom Tancredo and Fred Thompson are on the ballot but no longer active.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Nashville television stations sometimes announce their local start time, 7 a.m., as if it were a standard, but Bedford County elections have started at 9 a.m. for decades, and local officials say they would have to hire a second shift of poll workers in order to match the 7 a.m. start time.

Three precinct polling places have moved permanently, and a fourth has been moved temporarily just for this week's election.

The Raus precinct has been moved from the community club across the street to Thompson Creek Baptist Church, 120 Smith Chapel Road.

The Wheel precinct has been moved from the fire hall to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 2547 Highway 64 West.

The Flat Creek precinct has been moved from the old fire hall into the new fire and EMS hall, 410 Hilltop Road.

For this election only, the Bell Buckle precinct will vote in the old gymnasium at The Webb School, since there will be basketball games Tuesday evening in the new gym.

The county election office can be reached at 684-0531.

Hmm, well I don't always read what you have to say.. But thanks! It DOES need to be changed! It's such a waste though :(

We live in such a technologically advanced country and we can't take inactive candidates off the ballot? LOL.. laughable, but sad!

I hope they take the "inactive candidates" off of the ballot, that will render a completely wasted vote...

Response by John Carney:
The ballots, by Tennessee election law, are locked in weeks in advance -- well before the early-voting period -- and can't be changed at the last minute just because someone decides to stop campaigning. That's one of the reasons I wrote my column last week saying the primary system needs to be changed.
