Webb girls hitting their stride

Monday, February 4, 2008

The Webb Lady Feet are gradually learning how to win.

Following a two-point victory on the road Friday at David Brainerd Christian, the Lady Feet returned home Saturday and earned a hard-fought 38-29 win over visiting Huntland.

"The girls gutted out a win and they're learning to play the game," Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said. "It's great for those girls. They're 9-12 now and they are really a fun group to coach."

After leading for most of the way, the hosts found themselves down by two points early in the fourth period when Zola Quao took over. Quao responded in rapid fashion to knot the score at 27-all and jumpstarted the Lady Feet to a near-perfect fourth quarter finish.

"We've done that several times where things weren't looking so good and Zola or Elizabeth (Lawrence) will make a play," Mitchell said, noting Quao's effort as she played with four fouls down the stretch. "She ran the floor and got a layup, got an offensive rebound and a layup. So, she came in with four fouls, made big plays and put us over the top."

The Lady Hornets held a 9-4 lead after one period, but Webb came storming back in the second stanza. Callie Vaughn's long 3-pointer helped the home team quickly erase the five-point deficit in the midst of what would become an impressive 10-0 spurt and a 14-9 edge. The Lady Feet, who outscored the visitors 12-2 in the second quarter, went on to take a 16-11 advantage to the locker room.

Huntland quickly cut its deficit to two early in the third, but the hosts raced back in front 23-17 minutes later. The Lady Hornets then rallied back, however, and used a buzzer-beating 3-point bomb to tie the score at 25-all heading into the fourth period.

Using consistent rebounding along with crisp passing, Webb was able to pull away down the stretch, outscoring their opponent 13-4 in the closing eight minutes.

"They played hard, and Shayla (Mosley) and Alyx (Walker) just keep plugging along and getting better," Mitchell said. "I think Alyx had a great weekend defensively. We asked her to really expend some energy and chase some of their best players, so she did a nice job for us."

Lawrence paced the Lady Feet in the scoring column with a game-best 17 points. Quao also pitched in with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Huntland was led by Tia Sullenger with 11.

Webb welcomes East/Middle Region frontrunner Davidson Academy for a 6 p.m. matchup on Tuesday at the Barton Athletic Center.
