CHAPEL HILL -- Forrest continued its dominance over District 9-A foes with a 52-22 win over Community as Beth Hawn and Gaby Bussell combined for 27 points to outscore the visitors by themselves.

The loss by Community (12-8, 6-5 9-A) pretty much insures that the worst case scenario for local teams becomes reality as they will likely host a Bedford County team in the elimination round of the district tournament next week. Cascade is currently in fifth place, right behind their neighbors.

The Viqueens tied the score at 2-all with a basket from Aubrey Boyce and it would be the closest they would get the rest of the way as sixth-ranked Forrest (21-3, 11-0) embarked on a 16-point unanswered run behind 10 points by Hawn to enjoy a 22-6 lead as the quarter ended.

The Lady Rocket defense was especially tough on the young Viqueens in the second quarter, allowing just two free throws by Marissa Jones to bump their halftime advantage to 33-8.

"Sometimes you just have to give the other team credit where credit is due," Community coach Allison Layne said. "Forrest is big and strong on the inside and can hurt you from the perimeter when you pack it in.

"They also played the best defense against us that we have seen this season and totally took us out of our game early on.

"We were never able to recover from the run they made in the first quarter."

Hawn went back to work inside and netted six points as Forrest kept the pedal to the metal in the third frame with a 16-point effort to run the score out to 50-15 as the Viqueens managed only a 3-pointer by Jessica Thompson and four points by Jones in the third quarter.

Both coaches cleared the pine for the fourth period.

"As bad as the score seems, we did have some positives in this game compared to our last outing with these guys," Layne said. "We shot the ball better from the free-throw line and hit the offensive boards much better. We scored better from the baseline and didn't turn the ball over as much.

"It is time for us to put this game behind us and get ready for our next game."

Hawn had 16 points to lead both squads while Bussell backed her up with 11 for the Lady Rockets.

Jones led the Viqueens with nine points.

Forrest hit 12-of-15 from the charity stripe. Community went 7-for-9.

The Viqueens celebrate senior night as they play host to White House-Heritage on Thursday night at 6:30.
