Russ Faxon, the Bell Buckle sculptor whose best-known work in Bedford County may be the veterans monument on Shelbyville's public square, has been selected by the National Sculpture Society to have one of his bronze castings on display for the society's 75th anniversary exhibition in New York and South Carolina.
The work to be included in the show is called "The Signing." Faxon says he's not aware of any other sculptor from Tennessee who's been selected for the anniversary display, which opened today and runs through May 30 at the Park Avenue Atrium in midtown Manhattan, and is set from June 28 through Aug. 24 at Brookgreen Gardens on Pawley's Island, S.C.
"The juried show features the figurative works by 56 members," according to an announcement from the society. "Over 200 artists applied to the juried competition which boasts thousands of dollars in cash prizes."
The sculptures on display encompass a wide variety of media including, bronze, marble, wood and glass.
The National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by some of America's most prominent sculptors. Its members have created much of this country's public statues, coins and medals.
Faxon's statues are on display in Murfreesboro, Nashville and Alabama. Roy Acuff and Minnie Pearl are depicted in Faxon's statue on display in the lobby of the historic Ryman Auditorium. Faxon's statue of Stephen Tuttle Thompson, founder of Arab, Ala., is the centerpiece of a downtown park created by several residents to honor the man who was also postmaster and a Marshall County (Ala.) commissioner, according to District Judge Liles Burke of Arab.
Faxon was also the creator of the Bedford County Veterans Memorial on the courthouse square in Shelbyville.
