New sub regs to go before public

Friday, February 29, 2008

Shelbyville's planning commission approved amendments to the city's subdivision regulations Thursday and a public hearing will be scheduled before the new rules are approved by the city council.

The regulations deal with a variety of topics such as open space and are designed to make new subdivisions more livable.

The commission approved a site plan for a $2 million, 10,580-square foot annex office building for Duck River Electric Membership Corporation (DREMC).

The facility will be located at the corner of Eagle Boulevard and Learning Way, according to drawings submitted to the Planning Commission.

The L-shaped administrative headquarters would be located directly behind the current facility. Construction is slated to begin in May and DREMC hopes to move into the facility by Thanksgiving. The building will hold offices for 11 people in accounting and administration.

The current building will be kept "as is," freeing up space for current employees involved in operations, engineering member services and the Shelbyville district office.

In other business, the commission approved two rezoning requests. Donnie Pogue asked the commission to rezone 3.81 acres at 700 West Lane St., the old Empire building, from I-1 (light industrial) to PUD (planned unit development).

Activities at the site would include auto repair, climate-controlled self storage, and a separate building to be used as a wood pallet facility.

Another rezoning request was granted to Buchanan Beauty College at 925 Sevier St., with the 0.38 acres to be rezoned from R-3 (medium density residential) to C-2 (highway service district).

The commission also met as the Board of Zoning Appeals and approved a site at 1204 Fairfield Pike for conditional use by Vessels Unto Honour Ministries as a parsonage. The ministry plans to turn the existing structure into a church at a later date to be joined with a home which is behind the property.

Some concerns were expressed about traffic, but it was stated that the drive to the property is at the top of a hill with plenty of visibility.
