Fatal crash: The car in which Danny Underwood, 30, of Unionville was killed Monday night rests against a tree on Buzzard Roost Road. Underwood lost control of the Toyota Celica on a rain-slick curve about 8:30 p.m., Sgt. Tom Franklin of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said. It was Bedford County's second fatal accident of 2008.

A Shelbyville man who survived two accidents Saturday, one a rollover, told police he fled because he was afraid.

Edgar Andres Rivas, 21, Ward Circle, allegedly pulled in front of a car driven by Kaitlin Womack, 19, of Shelbyville after running a stop sign at the Hickory Drive-Fairfield Pike intersection.

Womack was injured when her car struck the side of Rivas's, Shelbyville police said. She was treated at Bedford County Medical Center.

Rivas sped away after the impact, damaging the yard of a Fairfield Pike home, before overturning the SUV about a half-mile away near the Brown Lane intersection, police said.

Officers later found Rivas walking along Quarry Street with glass in his hair. Rivas told Detective Lt. Pat Mathis he "got scared and took off running" after the wreck.

Rivas was charged with vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident. He was released on $5,000 bond. His vehicle was uninsured, police said.

Cash, register stolen

The cash register and contents and rolling papers and cigars were taken early Monday from a Wheel-area store.

A nearby resident heard the alarm at Big Wheel Market, Highway 64 West, about 1:30 a.m.

Investigators discovered a rock had been thrown through a door to gain entry.

*The sound system mixing board was stolen from Whosoever Will Pentecostal Church, East Cedar Street, within the past week, police said.

Entry did not appear to be forced, according to investigators.

*A battery charger and air compressor were stolen from a shop behind the Barbara Nichols home, Old Pencil Mill Road, within the past two weeks, the Bedford County Sheriff's Department was told Monday morning.

No signs of forced entry were apparent.

*A man who signed a contract Thursday with Pirtle & Howerton Automotive, North Main Street, to test drive a 2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab truck until the next day didn't return.

The truck is valued at $10,000, police said.

Unexpected ending

A suspect swallowed a plastic bag containing what an officer thought may be a controlled substance as they struggled in the parking lot of Park Trail Apartments.

Scott Daniel Carroll, 23, Huntingdon, was being searched by police after an off-duty officer working security said he saw two men smoking marijuana in a car.

Officer Jose Garza asked the occupants if he could search the vehicle after they denied smoking pot.

Carroll was told to keep his hands out of his pockets but allegedly took a bag that Garza said appeared to contain a controlled substance and put it into his mouth. The suspect swallowed the bag during a struggle on the ground as Garza ordered him to turn it over.

Charges of disorderly conduct and resisting stop/frisk/halt/search were filed against Carroll, who was released on $2,000 bond.

Vandals strike

Yard furniture and ornaments were stolen or damaged overnight Saturday throughout the Brookhaven subdivision off South Cannon Boulevard, police said.

Several reports to police included a bird bath and concrete angel broken and a plastic barrel from a construction site left on a front porch.

This guy wrecks two vehicles including his own and has no insurance.. Guess who will be paying for all the damage he caused? You and I through higher insurance premiums!

Maybe it's time to bring the chain gang back. We are building new schools, and DREMC is building. Make them work like the rest of us do. If their habitual, instead of picking up garbage, make them work. I wouldn't feel so bad about paying taxes then!

I am so amused by the crime log. The number of loosers and low lifes over 45 are absolutely amazing. Haven't they figured life out yet, how much is society paying for this. 20 somethings have a chance to straighten out. But 55, come on.
