Freshman Brittany Haynes was outstanding in her first varsity start, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts while allowing only three Lady Cougar hits and two walks.
"Everything ran pretty smoothly for my first time out," Frost said. "Brittany was around the plate all night and we played outstanding defense behind her. We were aggressive with the bats and that is a real positive for us because we are a young team."
Tiffany Kimberlin led the Viqueens with two hits and two RBIs. Corey Ann Hickerson added a two-run single.
The win came with a heavy price for the Purple and Gold, who are already playing with a thin roster, as Erica Keele suffered a broken right ankle while sliding into second base on a steal attempt. She will miss a minimum of six weeks.
"It was good to get a win and we are excited about our prospects for the season," Frost said. "We will miss Erica and we are of course always sorry to have any of our kids get hurt, but she is a competitor and she will be one of the first to be out there supporting her teammates the rest of the way.
"We will also be there for her as she begins the healing process."
