Two seriously hurt as vehicle hits tree

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Two young Shelbyville men were seriously injured Saturday night in a crash on State Highway 130 south of Shelbyville, authorities said.

Cameron Hix, the driver, and Clint Nichols were flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after their southbound vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree, according to Volunteer Fire Services Inc.

The accident occurred about 9 p.m.

Vehicle break-ins

Police say they have several suspects in a large number of vehicle break-ins Wednesday night across Shelbyville.

Arrests are anticipated soon, Detective Lt. Pat Mathis said.

One witness reported seeing three men and a woman in a silver Ford Contour take the items.

Those reporting thefts included:

*Megan Hardin, Wade Drive, Sirius satellite radio; the theft was discovered at 1:57 a.m. when Sgt. Charles Kimbril noticed two vehicles with interior lights on and one with a door open.

*Robin Lamb, Edgeview Drive; suede coat.

*Melissa Bell, Saddlewood Drive; handbag and contents.

*Lori Varner, Saddlewood Drive; purse containing over $400 worth of jewelry and change from her vehicle and ashtray containing change from her husband's car.

*Leisa Forrester, Saddlewood Drive; wallet.

*Larry Robin, Cherry Street; eight compact discs.

*Chad Odeneal, Sun Circle; approximately 50 compact discs.

*Tammy Brown, Raby Avenue; DVD and MP3 players, High School Musical 2 DVD, $30 in change and prescription drugs; truck's doors were found open around 2 a.m. by Lt. Mike Baker.

*David Presley, Walker Street; coat, iPod and connector, and wallet and contents.

*Darlene Sudberry, Forest Avenue; packs of cigarettes and $3 in change.

Suspect arrested

An unrelated, but similar, incident, occurred about 2 a.m. Friday near the Duck River access point behind Shelbyville Power on South Main Street.

Officer Jerry Draine said he saw a man, later identified as Christopher Neil Simmons, 27, Warners Bridge Road, running across South Main from behind an apartment complex.

Simmons slowed to a fast walk, took off his shoes behind Shelbyville Power's shop building and kept going, Draine said.

At that point DeMarco Marsh, Terae Askins and Alex Ortiz approached Draine's patrol car and accused Simmons of stealing the shoes and a camera from a vehicle.

Draine stopped Simmons moments later and found the camera in one of his pockets.

Simmons was charged with two counts of burglary and one count each of theft of property and criminal trespassing.

Drug charge

Police arrested an Algood man after allegedly finding 2.21 grams of marijuana in his car's ash tray.

Calvin Scott Hayes, 33, Algood, was stopped in the Wal-Mart parking lot Saturday as police searched for two suspects in an apparently-unrelated case.

Officer Jose Garza discovered the marijuana while searching Hayes' vehicle after a license check revealed Hayes had an outstanding warrant in Rutherford County.

Hayes posted $1,500 bond.

Thefts

*A motorcycle owned by James Smith of Park Trail Apartments, Green Lane, was taken from the parking lot between 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

*Eighty sheets of metal siding were taken from Keystone Office Complex, Elm Street, between March 7-13.

The siding is considered unique due to its square ribs rather than newer round ribs, police said.

Jail intake

They are only charged; guilt or innocence will be determined by the courts.

The list goes on and on all the time...That is why I live in the country..It would be nice to look one day and see that all this mess did not go on in our town..I watch the movie that was made here " Our Very Own" to remind me how good it once was. When I moved here 12 years ago from North Carolina ( The Outer Banks) I knew I was going to miss it alot. But my oldest sister lived here for years and we came to see her every summer. ( in Bell Buckle)and all the children were grown except one and he was just 5. I wanted to be near my sister cause we were getting older. I loved it when we 1st got here. Hwy. 231 was still a 2 lane. But they were making it into a 4 lane..Things have changed so much since then. It makes me so sad. I always thought that things get better in time. But what has happened here? Were did our wonderful little town go???
