Central flexes muscles vs. Franklin Co.

The Shelbyville Central boys and girls tennis teams completed a clean sweep of 14 matches against Franklin County at H.V. Griffin Park.

The Eagles didn't win all seven of their matches without a fight. Jordan Phelps won five consecutive games after being down 4-7.

The top 5 Eaglette seeds yielded only two games to the Rebelettes in singles play. Overall they claimed 56 of 59 games.

"I've liked some of the defensive play I have seen lately," Shelbyville coach Doyle Hutton said. "Brianne Jones hit several half-volleys from the backcourt off her shoelaces to keep herself in a number of rallies. John Dawson has hustled every match to run down what a lot of players would have given up on. Others are making similar defensive stands."

The Eagles improved their record to 4-0 and the Eaglettes are 3-1.

The junior varsity showed their worth as well, taking their young counterparts 7-2.

"I'm also excited about this year's added junior varsity play," Hutton said. "We've had a lot of potential sitting there just waiting to play, and now they can hone their skills even more as they try to earn a spot on the varsity squad."

The season resumes after spring break at Warren County on March 31.
