Eagles put notch in win column

Saturday, March 22, 2008
The Shelbyville Golden Eagles can finally take a deep breath. And it has nothing to do with the beginning of spring break.

After six straight losses to open the season, the Eagles finally put a mark in the win column on Friday afternoon.

Shelbyville (1-6) got a clutch grand slam from senior Drew Turner in the fourth inning, then cruised to an 8-2 win over Loretto in the Eagles' third game of the Courier Classic in Savannah.

The Eagles took a 3-2 advantage in the third frame before Turner's bases-loaded blast broke the game wide open in the fourth.

"We knew we needed to get a 'W' somehow, so this was good for the kids," Shelbyville coach Brad Frasier said. "We have played some good people so far. We've played well and still lost, and then we've had games that we just didn't play well."

Turner easily guided the winners at the plate with a homer and two singles along with three runs scored.

Hunter Bates earned the victory on the mound, going the distance while racking up six strikeouts.

"Now, we just have to work every day and get better," Frasier said. "We're not swinging the bats at all and not making adjustments right now. We've got to do a better job of that."

Huntingdon 8, Shelbyville 1 (Friday): Earlier on Friday, the Eagles managed only two hits and struck out 10 times as the Mustangs grabbed the easy victory.

"They are a good baseball team that has been to the state tournament the last two years," Frasier said. "But we just didn't play well at all. It was a poor performance."

Turner hurled the first three innings with Chase Dial and Taylor Montgomery relieving in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively.

Shaquille Thompson's sixth inning solo home run was the only offense for the Eagles.

Hardin County 6, Shelbyville 5 (Thursday): The Eagles rallied late to take a 5-4 lead, but the host Tigers tied it in the seventh inning and scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.

"We battled back from a 4-0 deficit to take the lead on a very good baseball team, but we just couldn't finish the deal," Frasier said. "They are one of the best teams we'll face all year."

Hunter Brothers started on the hill and completed six innings for the visitors with J.T. Nelson relieving in the final two frames.

Jordan Cooper guided the Golden Eagles at the plate with a three-run homer.

The Golden Eagles, who finished play in the tournament Saturday against Giles County, travel to Franklin County for a key District 8-AAA contest Tuesday evening.
