Timely phone call led to grand jury action

Monday, March 24, 2008

Bedford County's grand jury has indicted a Shelbyville man on theft and traffic charges arising from a December incident that culminated with his arrest at about the time police were interviewing the complainant.

With a suspect in custody, an observant officer noticed his prisoner had a cell phone, so he had a fellow officer call the victim's number. The cell phone found on the suspect began to ring, according to police reports.

Dustin Danyale Darnell, 21, Purdy Court, was among nearly two dozen defendants indicted during the March term of the grand jury on March 17 when the preponderance of the cases alleged violation of various drug laws.

Indictment does not mean the defendant is guilty. It means that 12 county residents concluded there's probable cause to forward the case to circuit court and toward trial.

Darnell was indicted last week on charges he allegedly stole a car from the Bedford County Medical Center parking lot, and contents of a woman's purse. He allegedly wrecked the car and was charged with second offense driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license and violation of the implied consent law.

Elizabeth Wendel complained just before 6 a.m. on Dec. 2 and, as Officer Rod Stacy spoke with her, a police radio call announced the car had been wrecked on Wartrace-Bell Buckle Road.

Deputy Billy Smith reported Darnell was slightly injured and tried to flee on foot but was captured. Smith asked Stacy to call Wendel's number and the recovered cell phone rang.

Darnell was also indicted in a bike theft charge. Police had found a Mongoose mountain bike at BCMC's emergency room. The bike had been stolen earlier in the night from the front porch of the Keith Harden home.

Like most of the defendants indicted last week, Darnell was scheduled to return to the courthouse on April 3. Others are to return to circuit court on April 21.

Who is the trainer?

Isn't it lovely seeing the TWH trainers on this list. It never ends. The one really needs to be put away. But, they need to be outed and ousted from the Trainers association permanently. Umm, maybe someone should make a web page. Out-of-towners are constant victims to these thieves and good, paying people should have a right to know who these periennial thieves are.
