Ungrateful youths steal away with cash

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Two young boys took advantage of a break from heavy rain to steal money they spotted, Shelbyville police say.

The boys, who cannot be identified due to their ages, stopped their bicycles under an awning at Miss Menza's Day Care, Kingree Road, during heavy rain Tuesday afternoon. A day care worker brought the boys inside for a few minutes and helped dry them with towels and blankets, Officer Sam Jacobs said.

An employee told police she thinks the boys noticed a jar containing a small amount of money during their time inside the building.

Officers responded to a burglary alarm at the day care center Tuesday night. A window was broken and footprints, later determined to match one of the boys' shoes, were found inside near where the jar had been.

A neighbor told police he saw the boys acting suspiciously around the building and was going to call 911 but saw a police car pull over nearby. The officer was actually leading a tractor-trailer driver attempting to find Lynchburg Highway and had not noticed the boys, Jacobs said.

Police were told of the possible identity of one of the boys, who claimed a friend had brought him some money. The mother of one of the boys later found and turned over the money to police.

After questioning, the boys eventually admitted taking the money and leaving when the alarm sounded.

One of the boys is on probation for a previous burglary, police said.

Pit bull stolen

Two men took a pit bull puppy from a pen near Cunningham Auto Repair, East Depot Street, early Wednesday, police said.

A resident of an upstairs apartment told police he heard noise in an old car outside, looked outside and saw two men taking the 3-month female dog, which is dark brown with a black snout.

The suspects were described as heavy-set, Hispanic and driving a white Chevrolet S-10 truck with a red pinstripe.
