Leigha Carter used the glovework of all eight of her Cascade teammates in the field to the fullest extent as she pitched a one-hit shutout in a 19-0 District 9-A victory over visiting Community.

The Viqueens put the ball in play on a consistent basis against the right-handed sophomore, striking out but once in the five-inning affair. Carter worked around the plate and didn't issue a walk.

"We hit the ball, and I can't be upset at that," first-year Viqueen coach Libby Frost said.

Karly Joslyn broke up Carter's no-hit bid with a scorching single to right-center to lead off the top of the fourth inning.

Torey Hornberger tripled and scored the first run of the game before Cascade (7-3, 5-1 9-A) exploded an inning later.

The Lady Champs paired solid hitting with patience at the plate in the second frame, totaling nine runs on six hits and four walks. The last score came via an inside-the-park home run by Laura Jett.

Tiffany Gibbs highlighted a six-run third with a two-run single, her third hit of the ballgame.

Carter was perfect on the bump through 2 1/3 innings before Cascade tossed the ball around a bit.

"We had one ugly inning and made a few bad throws when they put the ball in play," Lady Champion coach Jeremy Austin said. "We hit the ball fairly well. We made a few bad decisions as far as pitch selection.

"All in all, a pretty good game. We'll take a district win any way we can get it."

Kathleen Lohay refused to be outdone by classmate Jett, leading off the fourth with a round tripper without leaving the yard.

Carter and Lauren Claxton joined Gibbs in the three-hit club. Jett paired her homer with a single.

Seniorless Community (1-8, 1-5) got a complete-game pitching performance from southpaw Brittany Haynes. The freshman had a strikeout and walked six.

The Viqueens look to rebound today when district-leading Forrest comes to Unionville.

"We just need to get it together in between the ears," Frost said. "We need to focus, and we need to do right what we know how to do right."

Cascade plays host to Moore County today. The game time was moved up two hours to 4:30.

The Raiderettes enter with vengeance in the back of their minds after losing a lead at home to the Orange and Black with two down in the seventh inning in the season opener.

"When you let one slip by late in the game and you get beat, you're always looking to come back for a little revenge," Austin said. "Moore County and Cascade has always been a big rivalry in every sport.

"Their ladies will be ready to go and ready to play and will be looking for a big 'W' to go in their column. At the same time, our girls will be ready to go too."
