The plant has about 70 employees. Production will be transferred to other facilities.
"It's unfortunate news," said Shelbyville & Bedford County Chamber of Commerce CEO Walt Wood. But he said other local industries have expanded their employment recently and that the Chamber is continuing to work with both existing employers and new prospects.
"We'll work as hard as we can to bring new jobs," said Wood.
Aleris International, Inc. is headquartered in Beachwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, and operates 48 production facilities in North America, Europe, South America and Asia, with approximately 8,800 employees.
The Aleris site, which melts down aluminum scrap, has had a succession of different names and owners, including IMCO. At one time, it was owned by Alcan. Later, long after Alcan had sold the aluminum plant, Alcan bought the American Can / Cebal plant on Madison Street. That plant, which produces plastic tubes for cosmetics, is still owned by Alcan and is not connected with or affected by the Aleris plant in any way.
In 2006, the Aleris plant installed warning sirens in case of a chlorine leak and announced that it had made $2 million in environmental improvements at the site. Some had complained about odors, supposedly from the plant, being smelled on the high school campus.

There is only a few high paying industries left in Shelbyville that I know of, Beamis, Walmart Distribution, Calsonic, and maybe Summit. There have been rumors of Calsonic closing down in a year or two. It is majority temps working there, and it has some of its parts made overseas, and from Mexico. They do "ALOT" of Downsizing, cutting hours and such.
Joshua, the only new jobs that are created in Shelbyville that I've noticed is from new restaurants, daycares, etc. these are very low pay, with no benefits, or no benefits you can afford, and only hire about 2 - 7 people. And alot of times they only last 1-2 years and close too.
The statement above about Alcan not being affected with Aleris:
>That plant, which produces plastic tubes for cosmetics, is still owned by Alcan and is not connected with or affected by the Aleris plant in any way.
Is that really true? Last thursday I heard they let go of alot of the temps from Alcan. Some of them had been working there for several years.
I work outside of Bedford County. The place I work is giving "short work weeks" and in some cases down to 24 hours a week. Oh and they are still hiring!!!!!!! Temp jobs of course, but why pay for cow when you can get the milk for free.
It's not only factories; I work for Michaels Arts and Crafts in Bloomington Indiania. We are going thru restructering right now also.Jobs have gone away and along with the "job tittle" goes the benifit. We have 4 people right now in my store who have lost their job positions, their 40 hours a week, plus benifits and now they are being classed as part time. They are all training to do the same jobs that they were doing individually and they are getting the work done in a 40 hr week which means they are each getting 10 hrs a week. They are doing this in all of their stores but the funny thing is we have not heard of a single person in Corp HQ in Dallas loosing their jobs or benifits.Funny HUH!And one more thing I found out 2 weeks ago that in 6 months they are doing it again and my JOB may be on the block next, life keeps getting better in the good ole USA!
Isn't it strange that all the jobs are moving overseas and all the people who live overseas are coming here?
This is not happening just in Shelbyville. This is a national situation. Plant operations are closing nationwide and moving overseas. We have lost many of the middle income jobs to low income overseas. All of those mortgages that were sold were sold to people with jobs that ended up losing first their jobs and then their homes. Wake up America and smell the coffee...We better make some changes and fast or NO one will be able to eat, have a home over their heads or be able to drive a car because of gas prices. THank you corporate America for taking care of the little people.
Its bad enough that people are losing their jobs but to have people like Obnoxious Henry Feldhaus make comments on Channel 2 news, like how great things are in Shelbyville. I don't think Henry Feldhaus has got out of the house much lately, all major industry is suffering or completely closing and for the 15,000 jobs he was talking about, how about how many jobs pay over minimum wage, how many is that, I don't know myself but its not as many as it use to be when there was major industry still in shelbyville and surrounding counties. I am a spouse of an employee who works at Aleris, who by the way is in a skilled trade. There are alot of good people at Aleris whose families depend on them to provide more than a minimum wage job can provide. I hope all current employees have alot of success finding employment in the near future.
dot340 - This is Scott Fralick from News 2. Please give me a call (or anyone from Aleris) at 615-417-4346.
Thanks,
Scott
My husband is an employee of Aleris. It did come as a shock for him as well for many of the other employees. We are not sure of what the future holds. We are thankful for the years he had a good job, many do not. We are putting our faith in God to see us through another chapter in our lives. He will see us thruogh.
I used to work there , a l ot of fine people will be out of work.
I used to live close to this plant. I moved away primarily because the city would not force them to fix the smell. It shouldn't have been that close to schools to begin with.
I use to work for this company years ago when it was called IMCO Recycling. They were a good company to work for but over time that changed. What probably hurt them the most was the economy. The price of aluminum scrap caused them to be vulnerable, they couldn't be competative in that market. And with no light at the end of the tunnel, they decided to consolidate their resources. That's my opinion.
I do hate it for the families that will be without jobs, but they have to put their faith in God who will see them through this trial in their lives.
This is sad, but don't blame it on illegals taking our jobs. Most companies are now under such scrutiny that hiring illegals would result in some sort of financial punishment. If Shelbyville really wanted to keep this plant, they would have come up with a financial package (tax breaks, etc.), which would have benefitted Aleris and kept them in Shelbyville. It's a new day and cities have to negotiate to keep plants in their own areas.

Yea it smelled like a huge catbox all last summer.
I have heard it is a very dangerous place also something about the gases they use. I had heard if there was any type of leak it would kill everything within miles of it which I didn't understand them putting schools so close to it..so I hate the fact that Shelbyville is losing more jobs and I feel sorry for the people who work there but on the other hand I am glad it will no longer be a danger to the children or the families who live near the plant, if there was ever a leak.
Not just "one more" but a glaring example of the lack of fiduciary responsibility of our Mayor and the full city council.
Firms like this dont just 'pull the plug' on an operation. Typically Shelbyville would have been notified at least 6 months ago of the impending plant closure. This property certainly wont be usable by virtually any other type of business.
Plant closures, drugs, graffiti, illegals running rampant, budget deficients kinda makes one wonder what it is they actually are doing ???
Is that the place that stinks so bad by the high school?
You are 100% right jaxspike
Joshua you must not work for a living. We'll recover??? How about the families who did not see this coming? Are they supposed to call the mortgage company and say "it's sad news but we'll recover?"
Ghost Town? You should count your blessings. New jobs are created in this town all the time. This is sad news, but we will recover as we always do.
And ye we are still inviting refugees and illegal immigrants to move here and take what few jobs are left.
Very sad indeed.
There goes another one....AGAIN !!!!! Soon we will be a ghost town
