Earthquake felt in Bedford County

Friday, April 18, 2008

Some residents of northern Middle Tennessee say they felt an earthquake this morning centered in eastern Illinois.

Calls poured in to television stations.

Bedford County Communications Center said only two calls were received from local residents who felt the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake was centered near the Illinois-Indiana border, about 6 miles east-southeast of New Salem, Ill.

It was recorded at 4:36 a.m., Central time, today and the preliminary magnitude is estimated at 5.4.

The earthquake's focus was about 3.4 miles down. We don't usually dig that far down, although there is a shaft in Russian almost 8 miles down.

The New Madrid fault line is where an earthquake occured in the late 1800's and created Reelfoot lake.

Studying the New Madrid fault line is really interesting. A good 8 pointer could really knock our socks off. There's another active seismic area in east Tennessee. I think in '03 a 4 or 5 pointer shook up up a little.

Kind of makes me wonder if Digging for oil, and all the other Deep diggings we do on the earth are harmful in some way. Like it may be affecting the stability of the earths surface or something.

I live in Bloomington Indiana, it hit here around 5:30(my time we are an hr ahead). My dog Shelby sensed it before we were woke by it.My husband had never been thru one before, but I'm a pro at it, I use to live in Califorina in the Bay area, so this quake was a baby compared to some.

We had an after shock around 11/ 11:30 am that was around a 3 or 4,Indiana University Geological team is very excited about the after shock they say that usually its not that strong and we could be in for a few days of small ones occuring.

I thought it was my wife being inappropriate with her gas again! I knew the bed shook but we all survived. She gets like that after a big spicy dinner the night before.....

Oh my gosh, Could this have really been the cause of 2 shelves breaking in my closet and not the fact that I was told I have too many cloths hanging up? I'm convinced it was the earthquake!!
