'Stamp Out Hunger' with postal-affiliated food drive

Tuesday, May 6, 2008
On Saturday, the National Association of Letter Carriers, Campbell Soup Company, the U.S. Postal Service and United Way of Bedford County will partner again to sponsor "Stamp Out Hunger," which according to organizers is the nation's largest single-day food drive.

Donors who wish to participate should put bags of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox on Saturday. The food will be delivered to food banks which serve Bedford County citizens, according to Dawn Holley, executive director of United Way of Bedford County.

Holley said customers on rural routes may need to make prior arrangements with their letter carrier; some rural vehicles or mailbox locations don't lend themselves to easy collection, and so advance notice is helpful in those locations.

Organizers say participants should not donate items which are past their expiration dates or those in glass containers. Suggested items include canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as many as 35 million Americans are at risk of hunger without some sort of support.

I think this is great...Even we are having a tuff time making ends meet each month....But I will have a bag of rice and tuna and veggies, pasta and cereal sitting out at my mailbox here in Wartrace..I hope everyone will do the same...I am also going to put some oatmeal in there too...So many times we all give canned goods and things like oatmeal and rice and pasta and tuna is so helpful..
