Season comes to close for Central baseball

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

MANCHESTER -- The season had to end at some point. Shelbyville's Golden Eagles just didn't want it to end this soon.

Using four hits and two runs in the bottom of the first, host Coffee County hung on for a 2-0 win Monday night to eliminate Shelbyville from the District 8-AAA tournament.

The Eagles outhit the Red Raiders by one, but just couldn't manage that clutch hit to break the shutout.

"We just didn't execute on the offensive end and it was the downfall of our team tonight," Shelbyville coach Brad Frasier said. "We failed to lay three bunts down in big situations and, when you don't do that, you don't win. We picked a bad time to do it, especially after working really, really hard on it Sunday at practice."

Shelbyville closes its season at 13-17, while the tourney hosts advance to take on Lawrence County in the losers' bracket final this evening.

"Honestly, we should have played better during the season, but we played well down the stretch and just came up a little short," Frasier said. "We need to take another step and try to get better. We'll work hard in the summer and the offseason and take another run at it (next year)."

Junior Jordan Cooper, who struck out the side in the first along with giving up the two runs, closed with 11 strikeouts and just one walk while allowing just the four early hits.

"Pitching was good. Jordan did a great job," Frasier said. "Other than the first, they didn't really sniff any offense. We just did not get the job done with the bats when we needed to."

Sawyer Mason got the win on the mound for the Raiders, fanning eight Eagle batters and walking only three.

Despite turning into a classic pitchers duel, Coffee County (19-14-1) got all the runs it needed right away.

Nathan Jones led off the home half of the first with a single and stole second before Jeremy Estill's single put runners on the corners with no outs. A Cooper strikeout followed, but the Raiders plated their first run on a Shelbyville throwing error. Brett Harris' RBI single with two outs and two strikes accounted for the only other run of the contest.

The Golden Eagles, who left eight runners on base, including four in scoring position, had their best opportunities to score in the third, sixth and seventh.

Matt Seibers and Drew Turner earned walks in the third and Michael Watkins followed with a two-out single to load the bases, but Shelbyville left them all stranded.

In the sixth, Watkins drew a walk and Stephon Ransom laid down a perfect bunt single to give the Eagles two on with no outs, however three consecutive outs ensued to end the threat.

Designated hitter Darrell Hardison led off the seventh with a triple off the wall in right center and Drew Turner later reached via a two-out walk, but Raider reliever Aaron Pearson got a ground ball to get out of the jam and earn the save as the home team dodged the final bullet.

Watkins paced the Eagles at the plate with two singles.

Six seniors finished off their careers in an Eagle uniform: Ransom, Seibers, Turner, Hunter Bates, Daniel Batten and Phillip Womble.

"We lose a lot of good players who played their hearts out for this program and that is all you can ask of them," Frasier said. "One thing about it…it is hard to replace tenacity and leadership, and they all had that."
