"I thought we had some momentum going forward and could take this match today, but it wasn't meant to be," Shelbyville coach Doyle Hutton said.
Sophomore Jenna Crouse brought home the lone victory, taking down Lady Falcon Shelby Wiser 8-2.
"I'm really proud of Jenna's performance this year," Hutton said. "She earned her spot on the varsity squad toward the middle of the season and did not lose a match as our No. 5 seed since then. She has a great attitude and is moving toward a level of commitment that will make a difference for her team."
Lincoln County's Kasi McDonald defeated Mallory Hutton 9-7. Central's Lorie Freeman dropped her match to Sierra Thomison 8-4. Eaglettes Brianne Jones and Sarah Garrett both lost their matches 8-5 to Hannah Gray and Carlisha Landers, respectively.
"Lorie is one of two seniors who made important contributions to her team," Hutton said. "She has had a storied high school tennis career, being part of a district championship team and placing first or second in girls doubles to advance to regions several times."
Also departing is No. 6 seed Ally Voynik.
"Voynik contributed more to varsity action earlier in the season but has been an important figure for the team. Last year Ally won the team leadership award and has kept the other girls working hard to keep their top five positions."
Hutton, Jones and Garrett all bring the experience of competing in two district finals into '09. Doyle Hutton noted that "maybe a thirst for a team victory will set in."
Shelbyville's boys host the Region 4-AAA final against Siegel on Friday at 4. H.V. Griffin Park is also the home site for the individual region tournament, which begins Monday at noon.
