Dog allegedly finds marijuana in car after search refused

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Marijuana was allegedly detected in a vehicle after the driver refused to allow a police search Tuesday night, officers say.

Officer Waymond Boyd said he stopped James Burnett Sanders Jr., 22, April Lane, for speeding on South Cannon Boulevard and noticed a "cigar" on the rear seat.

Sgt. David Sakich of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department and drug dog Sem were called after Sanders denied permission for the search, Boyd said. Police may search a vehicle without the driver's permission if a dog detects marijuana from outside.

Officers allegedly found .29 grams of marijuana after Sem "hit" on the vehicle's driver's side.

Sanders, who allegedly handed approximately 4.97 more grams of marijuana to Boyd at Bedford County Jail, was being held Wednesday on $1,000 bond.

Theft

A heat pump was stolen last week from a Nutmeg Drive home under construction, police said.

The wires were cut and unit removed from its pad, a representative of Jerry Butler Homes said.
