Kimery Wayne Hill, 28, of U.S. 41-A North, is charged with one count of vehicular homicide in the death of Robert "Bobby" Brown, 69, of Unionville.
He also faces four counts of reckless endangerment, one count of second offense driving on a suspended license, one count of reckless driving and a probation violation.
Hill is being represented by attorney David McKenzie, who said his first job is to investigate what occurred.
"The real key to this case is to find out what happened, what was going on," McKenzie said.
Brown was killed on April 28 after he was struck in his front yard on U.S. 41-A North by a truck driven by a Tullahoma man, Timothy A. McGehee, 43, after it was allegedly hit by Hill's car.
Law enforcement investigators stated that Brown was standing near the shoulder of the highway near a large Lowe's truck that was parked there while the driver was preparing to unload shingles.
According to a report by State Trooper Chad McAnally, the Hill and McGehee vehicles were headed south and Hill attempted to pass McGehee and allegedly struck the rear of McGehee's truck.
The McGehee truck collided into the front of the Lowe's truck, then spun around and struck Mr. Brown, who was thrown 20-30 yards from the point of impact and died shortly thereafter at the scene.
A passenger in Hill's car, his 3-year-old daughter, was not injured.
Moments before the fatal accident occurred, Deputy Tracey Harvey reported seeing Hill speeding down 41-A North. He was notifying other officers and turning to pursue when the accident occurred.
Hill allegedly sped away from the scene, but law enforcement was notified almost immediately as to where he had driven. His 1991 Acura Legend was found parked in a field with the smashed front end next to a fence row.
Officers said at the time they suspected the car had been intentionally parked in that location in an attempt to hide damage.
Brown was employed at Lowe's and was also a retired electrician. No members of the Brown family were present in court Thursday.
Hill is being held at the Bedford County Jail on $127,000 bond. He will next appear in Bedford County General Sessions Court on June 5.
