The Eagles entered the Region 4-AAA tournament on a high note, coming off a District 8-AAA regular season and tournament championship while posting the most wins (15) in the history of the program.
It all came to an abrupt halt when visiting Riverdale squeaked out a 2-0 win over the Eagles in the region semifinals.
The Warriors scored a goal with 3:22 remaining in the first half off the foot of Rion Smith on a free kick just outside the box, then added another goal midway through the second half when Patrick Compton's header found the back of the net.
Shelbyville had a number of opportunities, especially early in the match, but it just wasn't their night.
"We just had a hard time getting any rhythm going tonight," Shelbyville coach Neal Gordon said. "Riverdale is a great team and they did a good job of disrupting our rhythm and didn't let us get into the flow of the game. This one was tough to lose and there's really not a way to put positive spin on that."
Despite the disappointing loss, it was still a great year for Gordon and the Eagles, whose season ends with a final mark of 15-3-3.
"Overall this year this great bunch of guys has had a top-notch season, and I couldn't ask much more from them, even though we really wanted this win tonight. We have had a great year and you can't ever take that away from this team. We made it through the season without any major injuries and that's always good.
"This is a tough way to end the season, and I really hate it for this very good group of seniors."
It wraps up a great high school career for five talented seniors -- J.D. Certain, Ranferi De la Paz, Jorge Gamez, Javier Hernandez and Israel Rodriguez.

The future remains extremely bright for the Eagles with a lot young talent in the program.
"We're already looking forward to next year," Gordon said. "This program has been moving in the right direction for some time now, and I don't think that's going to change any time soon."
In the other region semifinal, Blackman concluded 8-AAA runner-up Columbia's season with a 5-4 victory.
