"It means everything."

Cascade senior Matt Bain said it best. He and the third-ranked Champions put their season on the line tonight at 7 when they host No. 4 Richland in one of eight Class A sectionals.

"If we lose, we're packing our stuff," Bain said. "Some of us are going to play college ball. Some of us ain't. We're going to try to stay hot and treat this game like it's the actual state championship game. Basically it is because if you lose, you're done. There are no guarantees for tomorrow."

It will be the first-ever sectional matchup played on campus at Cascade. The Lady Champion softball team hosted games in '90 and '91 but at First Christian Church. There was a sectional played in Wartrace but it was Community's boys basketball team in '89 competing.

Several players pumped their fists and grinned from ear to ear following Tuesday night's victory over Nashville Christian in the Region 5-A championship since they earned the right to play at home one more time in '08.

Left fielder Nick Batts and a tight group of six other seniors lead Cascade (27-5) and that core couldn't be more proud to be running onto their home field one last time with everything on the line.

"When we were playing at Nashville Christian the other night, before the game we were in the huddle and I told the guys that I wanted to go ahead and win so we can play at home in front of the crowd," Batts said. "I said I want cars to be lined up all down Fairfield Pike. I want everybody back there behind the fences enjoying the game. I want it to be a big-time atmosphere so we can come out and feed off the crowd."

Like Bain noted, not everybody gets the opportunity to continue their hardball career on the next level. For some this could be it, including Batts who is heading off to Lambuth University later this summer on a football scholarship.

"(Friday) is going to be real important to me because I'm probably not going to play baseball again," Batts said. "It was my first sport and always my favorite sport.

"Knowing it could end, gives me extra incentive to come out and play hard, make my plays and do my best. Whatever I've got to do to win."

Don't expect Richland to just roll over and play dead. They aren't 28-3 for nothing and they won their way into the Spring Fling last year as well.

Blayze Parsons is expected to take the mound for the Raiders. He was the winning pitcher the last time these two faced off when they took down homestanding Cascade 6-2 in the Walking Horse Wood Bat Classic a season ago.

The teams are long-time rivals and the Raiders put the Champs in the losers' bracket of the '05 district tournament with a 7-6 victory.

"Last year is last year, three years ago is three years ago," Cascade coach Chris Parker said. "We've got a different team. They've got a different team. Both of us are good. We've just got to go out there and try to prove who's best on that day."

The Champs are likely to counter Parsons on the hill with Josh Brown. The junior left-hander is 9-0 with a 1.05 ERA and sports a 79-19 strikeout-walk ratio in 53 1/3 innings.

The starting lineup for the Orange and Black is hitting a collective .366, led by Corey Mullins (.463, 9 HR), Kyle Clanton (.420), Justin Bryant (.415) and Batts (.376).

Their defense has turned it up a notch in the postseason. They've committed just five errors in as many games.

"This team is very special," Batts said. "I've played on a bunch of good teams. We've got all the tools it takes to keep on advancing. I've played on state championship teams before when I was 13, 14 and 15. We've got some of the same type things that those teams had."

Cascade expects a large crowd. Get their early if you plan on sitting in the limited bleacher space. Otherwise, find a spot to unfold your lawn chair or back your truck up to the fence.

The players hope everyone from alumni to youngsters learning the game to neighboring opponents come out and provide support.

As Bain said, every little bit helps.

"It would mean the world because if you have the fans going for you and all the momentum then it really gets into the opponent's head and keeps us pumped up so we play our best game.

"There's nothing greater than coming out here with people lined up with their trucks barbecuing and the fence is about to fall over cause everybody's hanging off of it. They're cheering for you and out there for you. It just feels great. I love it."

Despite taking the field in front of possibly hundreds of fans for the first time, Cascade has run through a gauntlet of tough opponents in preparation, including having played seven of the final 16 teams still standing in Class A over the last two years.

Bain made a diving, game-winning catch in the victory at Class AAA foe Blackman earlier this season and assures that ice water will be flowing through their veins.

"Experience calms your nerves because you've been in the situation before, you've been under tension before. All the seniors have great hearts and all great guys and we're going to pick each other up."

Well, i believe next year we'll see which team is " bedford county baseball." Coach frasier doesn't hold anything against cascade and he let richland use the facility because they had a 3 HOUR bus ride. you can not tell me that if a coach from another team called chris parker and asked to hit for thirty minutes before they played shelbyville that he wouldn't allow it. Coach was showing common courtesy and maybe you people should try it before you make yourselves look worse on here. I look forward to the day the eagles and champs meet on the diamond again. Go EAGLES!!!

Just thought I might add a little bit of info. Two more teams (Arlington and Ripley) competing in the state tournament used Central's facilities today. Clearly, there is no bias against Cascade. Central is willing to let any team use their facility if they request it. As others have said on here, its just common courtesy.

jjo- do you know if anyone in county has ever asked to use the facility and been turned down? Richland needed somewhere to hit so if they would have hit on one of the park fields who would you be going after? The city of Shelbyville for allowing such a thing?

I'm sure if any other in county team needed a place to hit then as long as the facility is not being used it would be ok for them to use it. Before you go blaming and judgin I think you need to check on things yourself.

Allowing the use of the facilty was a common courtesy amongst the sports world! We used to do it all the time when I played sports years ago...get over it and look at it this way Cascade played their hearts out and got beat- that happens sometimes ya know!

Ha! Not @ all, thanks anyways -- gonna end it right here, you can argue with yourself.

-- Posted by jjo on Tue, May 20, 2008, at 2:01 PM

cascade could stop by and use it on the way to play moore county next year? crazy. have they asked to use it or would they ever need to use it? have they been turned down? are you jealous of the facility or something?

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Tue, May 20, 2008, at 10:58 AM

Wonder why the same kindness has never been showed to the champions since this is such an "open facility"? Either way it doesn't matter because I don't think that anyone said we "LOSSED" to Richland because they got to use the facility.. Yeah we are just a bunch of "whiny babies" I guess that's how we are classified so guess we might as well make good of our NAME..

isn't it ironic that these comments are under this story? a must-win clash, this means everything, ice water flowing flowing through the veins, etc., etc. a lot of pressure on the kids, don't you think? makes it tough when you lose a big game and wanting to blame someone else is probably normal. this is sore loser speak in the worst way. so, they hit before the game. so what. doesn't every baseball team hit on a daily basis during the season? it's kind of important. nothing was given to richland. they had to earn it on the field and they did so convincingly. in every sport all over the country, teams allow other teams to use their facilities all the time. it's common decency. it is that simple.

I wouldn't expect anything else but a little whinning from the NORTH... end of the county!

I'm glad an excuse was found for the loss.

I guess the fact that Richland apparently out played the Champions in every facet of the game didn't have an impact in the outcome of the the game.

It's sad that a great season is tarnished by such a lame excuse like the use of a hitting facility.

These young men have worked hard and they desevere more than this from their apparent fans and supporters.

Does anyone think this would have been an issue if Cascade would have won?

Be honest with yourself!

Just know that anytime Shelbyville Central is in a similar position, if they EVER get there, we (Cascade) will be happy to open up our facility to let their opponent warm up and practice. Kindness needs to continue in the County!

-- Posted by Tatar Salad on Mon, May 19, 2008, at 9:11 AM

I'm sorry but I know enough about the game to understand pure kindness. there would be no reason to not let another team use your facility if they asked and it was available and your season was over. to call it bush league is an embarrassment. so, you are saying since they are in the same county then they shouldn't have done this? that is crazy. it is just being considerate to another team, no more and no less. don't read too much into a good deed.

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 11:25 PM

No, It's just bush league when someone from a school in the same county feels obligated to help someone in another county, that's on their sleeve not mine.. To me that is just principle it's not about anything other than that. Isn't that what you work hard for to have home field advantage--I know for a FACT that our boys were proud to be hosting this @ the Bell Buckle Baseball Park I am sorry that you don't see anything wrong with it that's why we all have our OWN opinions, but I do know that I am not the only one who seen something wrong with this & if you don't think it's bush league then you don't know much about the game.

-- Posted by jjo on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 11:12 PM

No, its just bush league for someone in your county to help another coach in another county. I think that if you read anything that I wrote it's PURE principle to me. I am not the only one who seen something wrong with it-- Our young men worked so hard this year & they were all proud of the fact that they DID have home field advantage, if you don't believe it's bush league then you don't know anything about baseball.

CHAMPIONS - You gave the fans an AWESOME baseball season! We are PROUD of you. You have shown us leadership and good sportsman ship and have taught us all the definition of TEAMWORK! CASCADE IS BEDFORD BASEBALL!

-- Posted by bevsaylor on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 10:22 PM

jjo I don't see a problem with that at all. why do you? i'm sure they called and asked and were allowed to do so. why is this sad to you and why do you think they are against you because of this? will this give them an automatic victory or something? are you planning to use this as an excuse later on if cascade loses? i'm sure they were just being nice. should they have turned richland down just because you think they should have?

-- Posted by DoubleJ on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 5:50 PM

well not everyone in the community is behind the champs someone felt that they needed to let Richland come to their facility & hit HOW sad.. No Matter the outcome we can hold our heads HIGH..

-- Posted by jjo on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 5:01 PM

Go Champs...Keep your heads high--Enjoy this moment.

Regardless of how tonight turns out, these group of guys are special, they have been winning ball games since they were 5 years old playing in Unionville. When they were 5 there was not a 5 year old "Coach Pitch" League in Shelbyville, so they played down there. Then they worked there way up to Little League, and then Babe Ruth, and now High School Seniors, Guys no matter what happens tonight, Thanks for the great memories. You have started a GREAT tradition for Cascade Baseball!!!! NOW PLAY BALL!

-- Posted by shelbyvillesports on Fri, May 16, 2008, at 4:35 PM

Some of you releazie and some do not but there are alot of little men that look up to you and will be watching tonight cheering you on. You have set some really good examples for these young men and for that you should be proud. I have a little man that loves this game just as much as some of you and when he put that #2 on and straps on that catchers equipment its all bussiness much like you. So know that these little men are watching and learning from you. Chris and Scott we are just as equally proud of you theres are good coaches behind these young men. So now guys know that this community is with you all the way and battling every battle with you. Congrats to all our seniors as they start another page of their lives. Good Luck tonight we are proud no matter what the out comes will be.

good luck and I love you all!
