The home's resident said she left at 10:30 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m. to find a pile of ashes from burned cardboard boxes and wooden crates in the center of the garage floor, Sgt. Nikia Elliott of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department said.
An open can of paint thinner was found nearby, according to officers.
The garage's door was destroyed, a window was cracked by heat and the ceiling joists and roof decking were charred, Elliott said.
Bell Buckle Fire Chief Ronnie Lokey said he suspected the fire had been set early during the time period in question, based upon the concrete floor's temperature.
Internet sting
A Murfreesboro man who allegedly thought he was meeting a 13-year-old girl befriended over the Internet was arrested Friday by Shelbyville police.
Dustin Lee Owens, 25, of Murfreesboro, was met and arrested by Detectives Charles Merlo, who portrayed the girl in an Internet chat room, and Brian Crews upon arrival at a Shelbyville location, police said.
Owens, charged with two counts of solicitation of a minor and one count of statutory rape, posted $30,000 bond.
Two other men have recently been charged in similar cases after alleged Internet contact with Merlo posing as a 13-year-old girl.
Party's over
An anonymous call led police to what they say was marijuana and drug paraphernalia in a unit at Davis Estates Apartments, Anthony Road, Saturday night.
Tanya Nicole Simpson, 18, listed by police as a resident of the apartment, allegedly told Officer Tracey Nelson she and a child were the only occupants. Officers found nine persons hiding in a closet, three more on a balcony and another in the bathroom, Nelson said.
Drug dog Remy allegedly alerted handler Nelson to three grinders and other drug paraphernalia.
James Robert Helmholtz, 19, Rockwood Court, is accused of making an unsuccessful attempt to eat a bag containing 5.04 grams of marijuana. Helmholtz was charged with possession of marijuana and posted $500 bond.
Christopher Prentice Marsh, 20, also listed as a resident of the apartment, and Simpson were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. They were released on $6,000 and $4,000 bonds respectively.
Justin Alexander Deweese, 18, Fairground Heights, allegedly admitted ownership of one of the grinders and a glass pipe. He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and posted $500 bond.
Seven teenagers were released to their parents, police say.

Most of the items stolen from the wallet of a woman at an Old Unionville Road horse training facility last week were found on Green Lane in Shelbyville, the Bedford County Sheriff's Department said.
A checkbook and credit card were missing but most other documents were found by city public works employees.
The woman told Deputy L.J. Puckett she discovered the theft Wednesday after being notified by VISA that charges were being made to her account.
