Shelbyville has a lot of visitors, and sooner or later, they all have one thing in common.
They get "turned around" or just plain lost.
This week, the city's public works department is doing something about that by numbering the traffic lights on Shelbyville's main arteries: Madison Street and North Main Street.
"Truck drivers are getting lost, getting turned around ... they're not sure where to turn," public works director Mark Clanton said, and the numbering system should help.
So instead of vague directions, a driver will know to make a left turn at traffic signal 4. This not only will be a boon for truck drivers, but traffic during horse shows.
"It's just an easier way to get them (visitors) from point A to point B," Clanton said.
Signs placed on the lights on North Main will be green, with numbers on Madison colored blue. The signs are orange on U.S. 231 South. The intersection of Madison and North Main is numbered with a red "0," due to its central location.

I just learned about numbered traffic lights while in KY over the weekend. I guess it's ok, but how about putting up street signs with names? Isn't that how we've been doing it for years and years?
The numbering of the red lights is a plus for anyone coming to Shelbyville. Whether it is a friend, relative or a new comer. Our city is rapidly changing, even if you had come here ten years ago, you could easily take the wrong turn. The days of telling someone to take a left or right down there by Billy Joe's is long gone folks...we are growing
It's about time! The horse show people our great for Bedford County. Why are locals still bashing the horse show people. We our lucky to still have the show all together. The Tennessee Miller Arena in Murfreesboro is a first class place and could easily handle all the people that show up for the TWHNC!Murfreesboro would gladly take the horse show money. Let's not bite the hand that feeds us.
As an out of state walking horse owner living months at a time in Shelbyville, spending all my disposable income connected with the horses centered in Shelbyville, supporting many who also live and spend in Shelbyville, the distaste and/or resentment for the "Horse Show People", as often displayed in the written comments regarding articles is puzzling. The horse industry brings millions to your city and Bedford County. The walking horse is part of your insignia. Something as simple as numbered lights for a city that goes in a loop is a bonus to anyone.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE WE ARE PAYING OUT OUR TAX MONEY FOR FLASH CARDS. I ALSO HAVE A 3YR. OLD GREAT GRANDSON WHO CAN TELL HIS WAY AROUND TOWN.
AS TIGHT AS OUR MONEY IS TODAY, WHY ON EARTH DO WE NEED THOSE SIGNS?!!!!
I first saw the number traffic signals in Pigeon Forge and boy did they help. Pigeon Forge even have vistor maps that are oriented around the numbered lights...very helpful. Maybe Shelbyville could look into something like that to help the out-of-towners who come here for a variety of reasons...the map could list eating spots, points of interest, various stores, and where to get medical attention. Even Bell Buckle and Wartrace could get in on the action and have their location and landmarks mapped...it could be a great way to really illustrate all that Bedford County has to offer to those who might otherwise not know.
Please don't forget the Horse Show People, that side of town get the street repaved and signs put up so they where to go. If they don't know by now, as long they been having the Horse Show at the same place. Have did they make it from Pont A to Point B? From there driveway to the entrance of the TWHNC. I have a 3yrs old great niece that can show you have to go from here to Nashville, tell you the name of a song she loves, by using 2 or 3 words.
