The City of Shelbyville's web site now has a new feature that will not only allow citizens to pay their property taxes online, but will also make it possible to look up tax information.

The new service can be found on the upper left hand side of the city's web page at www.shelbyvilletn.org.

City treasurer Gary Cantrell said the new feature allows citizens to pay taxes by credit card or check. There is a small service fee, Cantrell said.

"We don't want the taxpayer to have to foot the bill and reduce our revenues by having the city pay for it," he said.

Also, since the tax information is public record, anyone can search the figures, Cantrell explained. "It's the same information that's at the assessor's office," he said.

Searches can be made by the owner's name, property address, the receipt number or the map parcel number, which is used by realtors and lawyers.

Having the information online means saving for the city as well, Cantrell said.

"Fifty percent of our phone calls used to be lawyers wanting title searches, realtors ... it's convenient for them to be able to look it up and it saves taxpayer money because we have to take the time to field those calls," he said.

Cantrell suggests when looking up what you owe, to be sure to click the box that says "include paid taxes" before starting a search.

"This should be a convenience to the taxpayer and should save the city some money," he said.

Why can't the police department have something like that so people can pay their fines without having to come in? I tried to pay my fine a while back with my debit card only to be told that "we are not set up for that". Aggravating.

Thanks, Richard, that worked...

The search engine on that site is useless. Tried various addresses and names with no luck. Was able to get information to come up on Walmart and found it interesting that they hadn't payed taxes for 06 and 07.

It works fine for me. You have to click the box that says "include paid taxes" or you won't get many results.

I'll comment on whatever I choose. The website stated the amount of 06 tax and had unpaid out beside it. It provided no other details. Refrain from telling other people what to do in the future or keep your mouth shut!

The overdue taxes you see for Walmart are actually not overdue, they are tax assessor changes that were just assessed. So the additional amount is not due until 90 days after the new assessment. Don't comment on something you know nothing about!!!!
