City garbage routes to change next week

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

Shelbyville's sanitation officer has been wearing out his shoe leather for the past couple of weeks to make sure residents know which day to cart their trash to the curb.

Beginning Monday, the city's public works department will switch to a 4-day, 10-hour work week, meaning the Friday garbage route will be phased out and others will be changing.

Sanitation officer Jake Lane has already contacted those residents and businesses that dispose of their garbage in dumpsters to let them know that their route has moved to Monday, public works director Mark Clanton said.

"He's out there now ... pounding on doors to let people know what's going on," Clanton said, adding that his offices have received a large number of calls asking who will be impacted by the route change.

Beginning July 7, if your current garbage day is Friday, the new pickup day will be Wednesday.

If your current trash day is Tuesday and you live on Fairfield Pike from North Main Street to Deery Street, west of Deery on East Cedar, East Highland or North Jefferson Streets, or in Legends subdivision on Fairfield Pike, your new pickup day is Monday.

The most significant change is for Tuesday collection. If you live south of Madison Street, which includes North Brittain Street, East Franklin Street, East Lane Street, East Holland Street, Depot Street, Evens Street, Whitthorne Street, Park Place, North Main Street, Cherry Street, Birch Street, Forest Avenue, Sycamore Drive, Tremont Drive, Ligon Drive, Wildwood Drive, Whispering Oaks Drive, South Wall Street, Triangle Circle, Wartrace Pike, Bryant Street or Cypress Street, the new pickup day is Thursday.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday routes will stay the same except for the above exceptions, Clanton said. Garbage at the Shelbyville Municipal Airport and surrounding areas, such as the new Heritage Medical Center, is picked up by commerical vendors.

Any further questions about the route changes can be directed to the public works department at 684-2644.

Could you publish a map of Shelbyville with the pick-up areas coded for each day? Sure would be easier to figure out. Thanks.........
