Sr. Legion turns up heat in rout of Pulaski

Monday, July 21, 2008

Shelbyville Senior American Legion Post 23's sticks showed no ill effects of Saturday afternoon's heat, banging out 23 hits in their doubleheader sweep of visiting Pulaski Post 60, including a 12-4 win in the opener.

Post 23 wasted no time jumping all over the Giles Countians as one-out doubles from both Ben Jones and Bryant Prater helped stake them to a 3-0 advantage they would not relinquish.

In the bottom of the third, Shelbyville sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on five hits.

There was a Tony Allen sighting and the former Central Golden Eagle and current Columbia State center fielder didn't disappoint by banging out a double and a single. Thomas Turnbull tripled and singled. Prater added another double in the fourth and totaled two runs scored.

Matt Utterback earned the victory on the mound. He struck out four and walked one over five frames in a complete-game effort.

Shelbyville 11, Pulaski 0: The hits just kept on coming for the hosts and Drew Turner led the way in the second part of the double-dip. The former Eagle and Belmont bound infielder singled three times and tripled for a third of Post 23's 12 hits.

Again, Shelbyville came blasting out of the gates with a lucrative opening inning. Turner singled and Jones walked before two straight outs were recorded. Then, Jones, Jordan Burchett, Hunter Bates, Matt Utterback and Stephon Ransom all provided singles around walks to Allen and Prater. Drew Owen had the biggest blow with his home run to left.

Owen paired his bomb with a triple in a two-run second inning. Burchett notched his second single in that same second frame.

Justin Brewer twirled a two-hit shutout, striking out four and walking only one.

Shelbyville heads out to Cascade on Tuesday night to take on the Middle Tennessee Mudcats.
