Alleged attack at ER leads to assault charges

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Two assault charges have been filed against a Shelbyville man who allegedly attacked a couple at Heritage Medical Center's emergency room about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

David Eugene Stacey Jr., 20, Green Lane, was arrested on Hart's Chapel Road after allegedly running in front of a police car and initially refusing orders to stop, Officer Tory Moore said.

Following a brief foot pursuit, Stacey told Moore he was being chased by several persons who wanted to attack him.

Police said Stacey entered the emergency room loudly cursing, then turned his attention toward the couple, who had brought their child for treatment.

Stacey allegedly became "enraged" and struck the woman in the head after being asked to stop using foul language around her child, Moore said, then left the building and hit the woman's husband in the mouth before running away.

Stacey posted $14,000 bond at Bedford County Jail.

Tires taken

An employee of a Shelbyville tire store told police he watched as someone took 12 newly-delivered tires in three trips Tuesday.

Four Goodyear Wrangler tires apiece were taken from Gateway Tire, North Main Street, at 10:50 a.m., four more again a short time later, and the final four at 1:10 p.m., police said.

The employee said the tires were loaded into a burgundy Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

I'm not ready to pass judgment yet on the employee

of the tire shop because it seems thieves are becoming more and more brazen and greedy. Just look at some of the headline stories in the past few weeks. The employee who greedily and brazenly embezzeled money from Calsonic is just one example of how openly and connivingly people with criminal minds operate. The thief in the truck probably thought by just backing up, taking the tires in broad open daylight that no one would suspect that he was doing anything wrong. As long as you act normal, and act fast, you don't stir up anyone's curiosity or suspicions. Not all snakes crawl at night. I imagine it would be startling if all facts were in on how many people steal from businesses and employers each year.

Yeah, I am with you guys. Three trips to steal 3 sets of tires. I think the employee is making it up and he probably sold and pocketed the money for the tires. He sounds like he might not be bright enough to make up a legit story.

bear,

I do not believe money has any bearing on this issue since there are 2 security guards on duty 24/7 at the new hospital.

First the ER is a public place; however it is also private property. (Unlike the county owned hospital.) Most hospitals have on duty security at the ER to deter, detect and report any crime being committed. The question now is, based on the crime data and risk assessment done by the Security Director, does the medical center need full time security officers. Looking at the crime blotter that is posted in the paper and the annual data that is available on the internet. The answer is relative to how much risk is the medical center willing to assume to save money. The money saved is money to pay a few qualified people to do work in that capacity. The facility could also hire a contract security company to fill that role.

Bedford County Hospital, while county owned had 3 full time security on staff. That was a number of years ago.

The crime data in our county has not gone down. Infact violent crime has gone up. With the influx of Hispanics, Somalians and other groups, gang activity is on a sharp rise.

Again does the risk assessment done at the Med Ctr validate security staff on duty at the ER?

It's all about Money

WHY WASN'T TRESPASS AND ASSAULT ON AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL WORKER ADDED TO THE GREEN LANE PERPITRATOR??HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD AT LEAST FOR $100THOUSAND BOND.THE HOSPITAL NEEDS TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE HERE!!!STOP THIS KIND OF STUFF NOW.

grandpat,

A couple of things you really should know. First typing in all capitals is considered to be yelling and very rude.

Second, the hospital has nothing to do with setting bonds or making examples out of people...that would be the judicial system. Also since no assault of an emergency medical worker was mentioned in the story and the hospital is a public place, that would explain why those charges were not placed.

Please lower your caps and let the rest of us know you are not being rude or if not and if you should continue to make such ignorant statements, then I guess the rest of us will just write it off to you being stupid.

I agree. Why not try call the police, or try and stop them? It doesn't make sense to me either!

Is it just me, or should the Gateway employee have called police after the FIRST set of tires were stolen?? Even if he thought it was a customer, shouldn't he have gotten suspicious when they left and then returned a second time? Just thinking out loud...
