Man critical after alleged crime spree

Friday, July 25, 2008

An Atlanta man who allegedly stole a truck in Shelbyville Wednesday is in critical condition in a Chattanooga hospital after allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman, run down a deputy and flee from police at high speed through Franklin County.

According to a report by Shelbyville police officer Josh Leverette, Francisco Carrillo told authorities that Abbas Hussein, who was in town "for a camp" at an East Depot Street location described by Leverette as "possibly a Somalian mosque," reached into Carrillo's right front pocket and took his car keys.

Carrillo told police he believed Hussein may have been headed toward Murfreesboro to possibly board a bus for Atlanta, since he asked for a ride to the bus station earlier in the day, the report said.

Instead, Hussein allegedly took the 1996 Ford Explorer and headed south, where he allegedly entered Center Grove Baptist Church between Estill Springs and Tullahoma about 9 p.m. and allegedly attempted to rape a woman in the building.

A report by Franklin County Deputy Charles Stines stated that Hussein entered the church asking for water, but the woman present asked him to leave when she became suspicious of the man.

Hussein then allegedly tried to convince the woman to perform a sex act and when she refused to do so, offered her $10 for the act, with the woman telling Hussein "she was a Christian and married and that he needed to leave."

The report states that Hussein grabbed the woman's hand and twisted it, but she began to kick him and he let her go. She then entered the office of the church with the man behind her, according to police records, with Hussein allegedly grabbing her purse, but the woman "forcibly removed it from his hands."

Following a struggle, the woman was able to shut the door, placing her feet on a cabinet to brace herself against the door to prevent the man from getting into the church office. The woman then called 9-1-1 to report the incident, at which time Hussein left the building.

Following that incident, Franklin County deputies received a report that a 1999 Ford F-250 had been stolen from Speedy Sak Market north of Estill Springs, with Hussein allegedly leaving Carrillo's truck behind. The stolen vehicle was spotted by Sgt. Milton Binkley of the sheriff's department, who attempted to pull it over.

Hussein was driving without lights and pulled into Kennith Wessner Ford but, as Binkley attempted an arrest, Hussein allegedly sped away from the scene, nearly running him down. The officer suffered an injured ankle as he dove out of the path of the stolen truck, according to Lt. Mike Bell of the Franklin County Sheriff Department.

The stolen vehicle was then spotted by Deputy Robert Tipps, who also attempted to stop Hussein, near Speedway Market on U.S. 64 travelling toward Huntland. Tipps' report stated that Hussein was "driving very erratic and was all over the roadway."

Tipps reported that Hussein then crossed the center line and left the roadway, entering the grassy median, where the truck struck an emergency turn around area, went airborne and rolled several times, ejecting the driver. The chase and accident were captured on the dash video camera in Tipps' patrol car.

The report said Hussein appeared dead at the scene, but officers managed to clear his airway and Hussein began to breathe again. Paramedics from Rural Metro Ambulance Service arrived, requesting a helicopter to land at Southern Tennessee Medical Center in Winchester, which flew Hussein to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

Tipps' report stated that the truck Hussein was in at Center Grove Baptist Church was the one stolen from Carillo in Shelbyville.

Lt. Bell told the T-G Thursday that Hussein's family in Atlanta explained the man had been "attending a religious conference of some kind in Shelbyville."

Hussein is facing a list of charges including attempted sexual assault, aggravated assault, theft of property, failure to yield to blue lights, among other offenses, Bell said.

"He didn't seem to be under the influence," Bell said. "I don't know what he was thinking when he did it."

"He didn't seem to be under the influence," Bell said. "I don't know what he was thinking when he did it."

Same thing all of them seem to be under the influence of to me.......thinking they are above our laws in this country and that they can do what they want, when and where they want. A RELIGIOUS conference and then try to sexually assault a woman in a CHURCH!! HHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMM.....

You better get used to this kind of thing. These people are terrorists here to do nothing more than disrupt our society and kill as many as possible by way of "automobile accidents". I don't trust them and I will never trust them. It's obvious that they hate Americans. If you are in a "auto accident" involving a Somalian, ask to see their drivers license and insurance if you are still able to do so. If they won't give it to you, ask the police who arrive on the scene to view these yourself and snap a picture with a cellphone or camera. It very well may save you a lawsuit.

I feel terrible for the lady involved in this, and I pray she will get thru this.

However, I feel even worse for the fact that our judicial system will likely yet again fail us in that the suspect will likely never truly be punished for the crimes committed.

My daughter (9) and I were at the Speedy Sak at the time this incident took place. I immediately noticed that this man looked very suspicious and took caution to have my son watch my vehicle very carefully and as my daughter and I went into the store, he was trying to start the Explorer with no luck. He looked glaringly at my young daughter and waved to her. I noticed him come into the store while browsing for snacks and he was watching the young man whose Ford truck was stolen. I did not see him leave in the truck, but knew that there was something wrong with him. We could very well have been his next victim. It pays to be cautious and suspicious of everyone.

These people are used to riding camels not driving cars...you hand them a set of car keys and they think "WOW, VROOOM VROOOM I CAN GO REALLY FAST, THIS IS FUN". They are rude to most everyone they come in contact with and do nothing more than clog up our jails, doctors offices, health department and human services offices. I was in a bank on the city square a few days ago when I watched one of them taking several pictures of the interior of the bank with his cell phone. I allerted a cashier and told her what he was doing saying "It seemed strange to me what he was doing"...her response was, "They all seem strange to me"...but yet she never reported to anyone what he was doing taking pictures inside of the bank. Just maybe he was looking to blow it up or rob it? DUH.

Guess nobody ever watched Blackhawk down. Which I know is a moive but it was based on actual events.

Thes people dont care about Americans, how many have ever tried to speak to you or even enter act.

-- Posted by johnnyreb on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 11:32 AM

The police should not have worried about his airway now we have to pay for his medical care and to keep him up and feed him. He should not of been here in the first place. Jaxspike is right I am not shocked at all........

-- Posted by Thatsmystory on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 11:51 AM

It ticks me off because IM SURE he wont have any hospital bills after this becasue IM SURE the government will pay for all that!!!!!!!!!

Ship them all off somewhere!!!!!!!! Thats why REAL AMERICANS that really need help can't get it because of THOSE people that are all receiving everything they want and need through our government! This world is literally going to HELL in a handbag.

Everyone better be worrying about getting right with the LORD, casue it will be too late soon enough!

DROP THE S.O.B.OUT OF THE HELICOPTER,OR SHOOT HIM.HE'S A REAL TERRORIST!!!

-- Posted by grandpat on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 12:10 PM

Why didn't the police just let him die? Seems like a more humane thing to do to me, considering the fact he nearly killed innocent Americans and more than likely won't spend much jail time just because he's foreign.

>>>Lt. Bell told the T-G Thursday that Hussein's family in Atlanta explained the man had been "attending a religious conference of some kind in Shelbyville." <<<

he sounds really religious to me (sarcasm)

-- Posted by Dianatn on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 3:42 PM

You people scare me. This was a dangerous man. He has been captured and will be tried.

Saying that these people should all be shot, be left to die, or shipped out of our country is remenescient of thinking from 50 years ago. How do you know that he is not an american? The story said he was from Atlanta. You think we we should shoot Georgians?

Maybe the south hasn't entered the 21st century yet.

As for getting right with the Lord, the God I worship loves all of his children, and wants us to do the same. He gives each person a choice to come to him, and perhaps this man will at some time. Perhaps we should all pray for the victims as well as the perpetrator.

-- Posted by whatda on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 3:53 PM

This is all too funny because Americans do not have the backbone to make the government put an end to these kind of people being allowed to live in this country with the beliefs and subsequent actions they have. A Somalian mosque in Shelbyville...LOL...the beginning of the end.

To a muslim male, a woman out a 9 p.m. "uncovered" by herself is just asking for it...they actually believe that. The liberals simply do not understand nor do they want to learn because to them -- politics IS their religion. When you refuse to listen, you get what you deserve. If you want to change what you're getting, then change what you're doing. Otherwise, put up with it.

-- Posted by elsancudo on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 4:03 PM

Oh, almost forgot...try assaulting a woman in a mosque in a Muslim country and see what happens next.

-- Posted by elsancudo on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 4:05 PM

And from what I read in our paper, we now have events here to help us 'understand' them better.

A thug is a thug is a thug regardless of how you dress him or what you call him.

What I personally understand of them is that they are very rude, without manners, have no interest in becoming part of our society but they all sure seem to be in line for any government handout.

For anyone who is unaware, I was given to understand by a teacher in Bedford county that there children do not have to abide by the school district clothing code, that 'they' are able to wear their native garb. Must be nice to be a guest in another country and to be able to lord over everyone because it seems that NO government official will stand up and say enough !!!!

Having lived in an area with a rapidly growing illegal population prior to moving here, its always easy to pick illegals out of a crowd. They are the ones who always maintain the dress, the customs and the language of their native land.

ANYONE moving to our great nation who wants to be a part of society ALWAYS learns the language, the customs, the laws and endeavors to become a 'part of' rather than staying a distinct outsider.

If they are so very deeply unhappy here then the solution is quite simple.... GO HOME and get the hell out of MY country.

Will authorities investigate this as a possible hate crime? Will the FBI be informed? It appears this deranged individual committed a calculated criminal act.

Why did he wait until after he left the mosque and then deliberately entered a Christian church with malice and set up the victim inside the church?

-- Posted by Concerned Christian on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 6:16 PM

"Will authorities investigate this as a possible hate crime?"

----- Posted by Concerned Christian

It's highly unlikely that Hussein will be charged with a hate crime. He's a black Muslim, and a minority who was dropped here into the U.S. not knowing our laws and standards, so therefore HE is actually the victim in this situation, and the lady in Franklin County, as well as any other United States citizen, is the oppressor.

*can ya smell the sarcasm? Yeah, my statement is loaded with it.*

-- Posted by craftin_mom on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 6:39 PM

I truly wonder how many people here would be so absurd had it been a white man in this story. Why wonder, when we all know most of you would act completely different. This guy isn't a terrorist because he's a Muslim. He's not a terrorist because he's a criminal. He's not a terrorist because he doesn't look like, believe in, or see things like you.

He's just another criminal. Just like the criminal friends you have, the criminal family you love, and the criminal that you didn't think twice about the last time a story like this happened.

The backwoods train of thought shown in this page alone is enough to scare me far more than any muslim "terrorist". To think people are truly this incapable of judging someone based on something other than stereotypes that fit in the 1980s. Sad.

very disrespectful

I was taught that Ellis Island was in New York. But in this day and age,it's Bedford County.Bedford County seems to be the boiling pot where everyone comes too.Legal or not. They get every kind of hand out that there is.They drive with no licenses or insurance. They come here get pregnant deliver babies here so they can stay. If they aren't legal, their babies shouldn't be either.I had hoped that Tenn Care would go to the American Tennessee people, young and old.But you go into any doctors office, some few more then others and see the " FREE " medical attention they recieve.

Wake up these people are not Needy, they are " GREEDY ". Work here no taxes paid, send their money back to their countries, where the money is worth more.Theres one Doctors office in town, that no matter what day it is, they are in there with their babies in tote. And not one, but several of them. And you have to wait for Lynnette for ever to get her to see you.But you get a senior citizen on Medicare to get the same treatment, and oh nooooooo they don't accept those kind of patients.

I just have one question....

" Aren't ya all PROUD to be an American?" If ya are,so be it. Because in the future there won't be the United States of America any more.....

-- Posted by Wheelbillie on Fri, Jul 25, 2008, at 11:11 PM

Islam is a death cult. The cult is driven by a small percentage of devout believers who do violence in the name of Islam.

This man is just doing what the cult teaches.

More Muslims means more of the same. Just look around the world. Every place where Muslims populations start to grow, the same problem exists.

-- Posted by bobsmith on Sat, Jul 26, 2008, at 9:08 AM

It sounds to me that the people of Bedford County are upset and irate at the government concerning treatment of foreigners and it is almost making us willing to become vigilantees. That energy would be much better spent trying to figure out how to control our representatives that let the assinine laws take place that serve the undeserving individuals. Yes, we American people are being taken advantage of on a daily basis, and would these other countries offer us the same opportunities, advantages, and accomodations that we so readily offer these illegal people - NO! and I do not believe that the American people can afford to keep doing this much longer. We will be a third world country if this pace keeps up.

To my understanding in the past when foreigners wanted to immigrate to America they had to prove themselves before they were ever granted citizenship. Perhaps, in ways, we do need to return to the old days. All things were not bad in past eras belive it or not. Oh the south has well entered the 21st century along with the issues that have come right along with it. How we handle these issues will take courage, perserverance, and wisdom. Sometimes we seem to be lacking a lot in the wisdom department in the 21st century. Perhaps if we could bring back some of our forefathers..........

BLACK HAWK DOWN. I agree Reb. Totally. No im not rascist, sexist, anti other religious sects etc...They hate our country, yet they come in droves claiming to be "refugees." The truth sucks.

-- Posted by driedleaves on Sat, Jul 26, 2008, at 5:58 PM

Iconoclast, I want to commentd you on your completely opposite approach to this situation. It seems all the others that have posted seem to forget that ALL of our ancestors were not only immigrants at one time, but a large majority of them were also criminals condemned and shipped to this nation as slaves in the very beginning of America's history.

While I agree that what has transpired is completely and utterly shameful and apalling, this could have just as easily been a white, black, red or yellow man that committed this crime. Would all the other bloggers held the same stance if it had been either of those? I believe I can honestly and shamefully say "NO".

Just because they have a different skin color, religion or speak a different language does not immediately make them a "terrorist". A terrorist is defined as "one who inspires fear". In my opinion this would make anyone listed in the jail intake for fighting, robbery, domestic assault, DUI, public drunkeness, etc. and those who have not been caught yet, a terrorist to some degree, because somewhere along the line, whether it be the victim(s) of the misdeed, or just someone reading about it in this very paper, someone is frightened due to their act(s).

-- Posted by ghostrider on Sat, Jul 26, 2008, at 8:48 PM

ghostrider,

While I agree with most of what you said, why did the individual target the church? Why not start at the mosque? Something doesn't really add up.

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Sun, Jul 27, 2008, at 9:44 AM

It has nothing to do with color...as already stated. There are some in the bunch that have SAID that they hate America....Yea we are all illegals here...but I think I speak for all the bloggers when I say WE LOVE THE USA. Terrorists? Maybe, something we have to live with...yes. Again, the truth sucks.

I have noticed an upward trend in the number of Somali's who are coming through our jail in Bedford County. Initially, these people were peaceful and respectful. Heck, we barely noticed they were here. And now, they are almost as bad as the illiegal Mexicans. They glare at us "white folks" like we're in the wrong for walking our own streets or shopping in our own stores. I hadn't really noticed it until a recent trip to Wal-Mart. A group of about 3 or 4 young Somali men were walking out of Wal-Mart as my husband and i were walking in. The men were walking shoulder to shoulder and were taking up the entire width of the isle in the parking lot. As my husband and I approached, I stepped closer to my husband as it was clear they were not going to allow me to walk past them. When we did walk past them, all of the men just glared at my husband and I as if we had just insulted them by daring to walk past them. I've never been so disgusted. I would have told them where to stick it if i thought they would understand a word i said. Our society is fostering a culture of entitlement among immigrants and it MUST STOP! We are killing our own country by letting ourselves get overrun with non-Americans...I said non-Americans, not non-whites...I don't care what color you are or what religion, but if you are going to be here then show some patriotism. Just a thought, but what if we all picketed Tyson and forced them to stop hiring (heck, shipping in) these Somali's...do you think that might slow the trend? Maybe not, but it's worth a shot!

I left Houston,Texas 8 years ago to get away from the crime and its seemingly is starting to get here quick.I wished that the criminals would go back to where ever they came from it could'nt be the LOCAL'S that has always been here alot of them don't have a concience to them if they did they surely would'nt come to this fine state.

-- Posted by b-welcome on Thu, Jul 31, 2008, at 2:53 AM

The criminal involved must be prosecuted, punished and deported back to where he came from.Criminals and terrorists do not belong to any religion, they are cowards who use the name of their religion to commit crimes against the innocent.

I beleive that the government and and the employersare responsible for 12 million illegals in this country. If the government starts arresting and heavily fining the employers for hiring illegals, it will eliminate the main reason for them coming here. They must be deported to save our future generations.

By the way, I am a former resident of shelbyville and proud to be a naturalized citizen of this Great Country.

-- Posted by isqazi on Fri, Aug 1, 2008, at 12:46 AM

There is a difference between a local guy committing a crime and then an immigrant (legal or not) who commits one. I figure we have enough white trash and thugs committing crimes as is without asking for more criminals from other countries. To say we wouldn't act the same if this had been a natural born American committing a crime is kind of absurd because we can not control the criminal element that are born here but we can control those that move here form another country.

And unlike many of the posters on this article, I have seen what the Somali community can do when they take over an area. I lived at Davis Estates for about four years and it was a nice place to live but then they started moving in and next thing you know there started being fights in the parking lot, cars getting hit and nicked by Somali drivers, horrible odors in the hallway coming from the Somali apartments, more trash being thrown everywhere, and etc. The apartment complex began to decline and so I eventually moved after dealing with constant noise in the middle of the night with them running around yelling and nothing being done about it. Heck, I had one leaning up against my door yelling on her cell phone and when I opened the door and asked her to take her conversation elsewhere, she told me to shut up and continued yelling even though she didn't live on that floor (Unfortunately for her, she then learned I don't take to that kind of behavior and told her she can walk away or her phone would be out the window). It also has nothing to do with race because there was a very sweet black lady who lived in our hallway and they were more hateful to her than the rest of us. While I disagree with illegal immigration and agree there are quite a few bad Hispanic drivers that have need some driving lessons, most have been fairly nice to me and typically I have no problems with them. Somalis are a different story and many of them will tell you that women are just property and that they do not like Americans.

That is just my experiences on the situation.

Hmmm, a member of the islamic CULT goes into a CHRISTIAN church speaks of an immoral act in the Christian religion and the islamic CULT. When refused attempts to force the woman into the act, again a sin in both the Christian religion and the islamic CULT, but not in the mind of most male members of the islamic CULT. Steals vehicles at random, attempts to run down a police officer, wrecks the vehicle, is given life-saving treatment by Christians and THEN we learn that the lunatic is in the area to attend a meeting of the islamic CULT.

Some may ask why I refer to the islamic CULT. As a Christian, the greatest sin is to defame GOD. The next is to defame HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.

If you'll think back a bit, you find that you cannot recall a single incident where members of the islamic CULT have gone on a murderous rampage because someone insult their "Allah", or JESUS, whom they call a prophet.

If mo hamm ed, a prophet is worthy of blind devotion, then why is JESUS not also accorded such devotion? Simple, JESUS preached love of your fellow man. mo hamm ed preached violence, intolerance and murder.

Members of the islamic cult go into a blind rampage when a Christians, Jews, or members of other religions make disparaging remarks about mo hamm ed, or when such remarks are made about the ko ran, or it is "mistreated". Funny, they don't have qualms about mistreating the Holy BIBLE.

Have you ever heard of an instance where members of the islamic CULT went on a rampage because someone insulted their "Allah"? Or GOD?

The one entity worthy of total devotion is not worthy of their violent actions, but mo hamm ed, a mere terrorist is worth of such. Could it be because mo hamm ed preached violence and that is what we can expect from the islamic CULT?
