The Lady Champions worked like a well-oiled machine and their teamwork definitely paid off in the end.
Alyssa Hoover exploded early in the first half and led the team with three goals, one of which was assisted by fellow eighth grader Haley Edmondson. Edmonson landed a goal of her own as well. Tori Slater went in the books with two goals and Courtnie Carter had one. Katelynn Edde scored a single goal with just over seven minutes left in the game.
Cascade gets a visit from undefeated Community Junior High on Monday at 4:30.
Community 1, Westwood 1: The Lady Rockets scored within the first five minutes to force the Viqueens to play from behind for the first time this season. Defense was the theme for both teams for the rest of the half as Westwood held on to the 1-0 lead at intermission.
The Manchester girls continued to match Community in both speed and strength as both battled until the Rockets made a mistake and the Viqueens capitalized.
After Westwood was whistled for a handball in the box, striker Kali Sitz rocketed a picture-perfect shot into the top right corner of the net to tie the game at 1 midway through the second half.
With less than three minutes to play, it looked as if midfielder Carolyn Pena would put the Viqueens on top as her long shot arched high over the Westwood goalie but hit the crossbar without scoring.
With only seconds left to play, Westwood got off three shots in front of Viqueen keeper Megan Sager, who made a phenomenal scooping save to the shock of the home fans and the delight of the Community visitors, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
The Viqueens host Liberty Middle on Friday at 4. Community High hosts Marshall County afterwards at 6.
