Nurse killed in accident

Friday, September 12, 2008
A night shift nurse at Heritage Medical Center was killed in a accident on Interstate 24 Monday near exit 105, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

According to a report by Trooper Jason McGee, 42-year-old Melissa Grace Bennett, of Manchester died after her eastbound Ford F-150 truck swerved to miss being hit by a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by a Tullahoma woman, 19-year-old Stacie LeAnn Lowe.

The report stated that Lowe was attempting to change lanes before she noticed Bennett in the lane beside her and chose not to shift lanes.

However, Bennett reportedly overcorrected while trying to avoid Lowe, left the interstate and the truck rolled several times. Bennett was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Melissa Bennett to our hospital family," said Pam Fisher, public relations director for Heritage Medical Center.

"She was a talented nurse and valuable employee whose compassion for her patients and friendships with her co-workers will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with her family and friends."
