"We have no earthly idea what caused the fire," Carter's stepfather, Wallace Baker, of Tullahoma, said.
A pickup truck parked near the residence also burned.
Carter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Bedford County Emergency Medical Service.
The fire broke out around 9:15 a.m.
