Janice Brothers
Janice Brothers has announced her candidacy for a Third District seat on Bedford County Board of Commissioners in the Nov. 4 election.

Brothers is the wife of the late Roger Brothers, who served as a commissioner for 30 years until his death in July. She was appointed by Bedford County Board of Commissioners to serve until the next general election and is now seeking election to the post.

Brothers worked for the U.S. Post Office for 20 years and operates Janice's Hair Care in Unionville.

She was an inaugural member of the Junior Pro Board and is a past member of Community School Booster Club, PTO, and the Community School Alumni Association. She has two children and five grandchildren.

"I know how important families are," she said, "and I will work to make this community the best place to live for your family and mine.

"One of my husband's final requests before his passing was for his family to finish serving his commission term," she said. "There are two years of his term left, and therefore, I am running to continue to be my husband's voice for all the many things that he fought so hard for the citizens of the Unionville area and Bedford County.

"During the last four years of his life, I attended almost every County Commission meeting, and I have become very familiar with the current issues that face Bedford County.

"We have always welcomed your phone calls in our home because we believe that government is for the people by the people. Thanks to my husband, your children and grandchildren will be attending a new Community High School. I will continue to build on my husband's long history of fighting for this community to have the best schools, roads, and fire and ambulance services. I was very proud that my husband always worked for our community while fighting to keep our taxes as low as possible. As your commissioner, I will strive to do my best to continue to provide you with good governmental services while keeping taxes as low as possible."

Shes been appointed to finish his term on Zoning Board of Appeals, BZA. But to those folks applying for or in the middle of an application must know that all board members must complete continuing ed CE hours each year and have it documented for public record. So you telling me she'll be qualified to make legitimate decisions on the BZA in only 2 months filing in? Remember there a people's hopes and dreams in these applications and endeavors to work for themselves maybe to get out from under corporate America.

"Steeler, My kids nor grandkids never went to Cascade. Probly why never heard of her."

See thats my point exactly, just because your kids nor your grandkids went to Cascade doesn't mean anything. She not only taught at Cascade but in Shelbyville & Community school also. Thats why we have 2 ears & 1 mouth so we can listen twice as much as we talk.... Just a tip for some folks..

Now, there are 2 people running for this seat. One is Mrs. Brothers & the other is Mr. Barber. The person I made a comment about in my last post. Mrs. Brothers has spent years at or around the comissioners meetings. So it's easy to say that no one knows it better than her.

How many are running for this seat? The article only tells of this one. Why aren't they all listed? Don't guess it matters I can't vote in that district anyway. Which leads me to say, should those of us who don't have a vote even be giving our opinion on this matter. Leave it to the people of Unionville and Rover.

AMEN SteelerT !!! HMMMM... What accomplishments.. you ask? Don't you read the paper? Do you go to any commissioner meetings? Did you not go to his funeral, what about on the nightly tv news? Yep, his accomplishments were broadcasted and honored on the Nashville nightly tv news. There are too many things for me to list. Mr Brothers was not re-elected 30 years for doing nothing! On the other hand, Mrs Brothers knows most of his contacts that has helped Bedford county receive state/federal/gov funding for many projects. A lot of folks don't have a clue about funding projects in bedford co. They automatically assume taxes go up everytime they read about a new project. Mr Brothers fought hard to keep taxes from going out the roof. Mrs Brothers has been right there beside him... she knows what she is up against! She is a fine lady. It's a Shame that one of Mr Brothers honorary pallbarers is running against her, not allowing her to at least finish out her husband's term. WOW.. Watch out, you never know who your friends are!!!!

It is funny how people who know nothing about this situation have something to say anyway. No, it's not just one boy/son they also have a daughter. A daughter that works in the education system that teaches the students of Bedford county. Also, she has been a teacher for about 17 years so she might have had some of your children in her classes over the years. Mr. Brothers did indeed ask for his term to be carried out by his son, but a conflict of interest has kept that from happening. So, since Mrs. Brothers was in attendance at all the Bedford County commissioners meetings with her husband over the years and had been in the situations that came up, that is why she has decided to run for the office in the election. So, the next thing y'all will have to say is she is a woman, even though she is the most qualified person running for this seat... i know for a fact that one of the other people running has been telling people that you can vote for 2 people on this ballot. However, the truth is if you vote for 2 the machine takes the top person on the ballot which will not be Brothers but Barber. Which leads to this, this is the same Gale Barber that was talking about running for this very office at Mr. Brothers funeral. So make you choice wisely & if your in the Third district of Unionville/Rover vote Brothers in this election.

Lets face it... it's a small town and sympathy votes do count too!

countrygal2008 ... You are SO right. Is it me or is this article a sick sympathy ploy? "Roger's final request was for his family to complete his term" Oh give me a break. I think I would be getting ready to meet my maker and not worry about the good ole boy politics of Bedford County.

Is this article for sympathy votes? Can she not run on "her" name?

Interesting point concerning Ledbetter.

"Third District seat" what do you not understand about that (WHAT???) The Third District isn't all of Bedford County it's in the Unionville/Rover area. Great comment nay sayer !! And by the way Mr. Brothers did have alot to do with all the new school projects across Bedford County. From the new Harris Middle School to Cascade to Unionville H.S. among other projects including your Ambulance services. Quit drinking the cool aid of another.

Good Luck Mrs.Brothers. I am sure you won't have any trouble getting re-elected. Your family's accomplishments shows your community that you are dedicated to making Bedford County a better place.

Let me get this straight. When Frog Ledbetter died, Roger was adamantly opposed to his widow finishing Frog's term. Now it is okay for Roger's widow to finish his term. And Mrs. Brothers' is partially correct "husband's voice for all the many things that he fought so hard for the citizens of the Unionville area" He fought for Unionville and not all of Bedford County. This was a little too sappy of an article for my taste.
