Q: Which Freon should I choose? I have been given a choice of 410 or 22?

A: "Freon" is a brand name. The new refrigerant is R-410a. The old refrigerant R-22 will be phased out by 2020. The production of R-22 is gradually being reduced, driving up the cost. Here are the pros and cons of both.

R-22 Pros: Tried and true. If your equipment develops a small leak you can "get by" with topping it off. (Leaks should be repaired). Is a single refrigerant not a mixture of refrigerants more stable. Uses mineral oil, which has a much lower ability to attract moisture.

R-22 Cons: Causes ozone depletion. Will rise in cost.

R-410a Pros: Environmentally friendly. Approx. 10% more efficient (uses less electricity). Actually cools the compressor better. Uses a synthetic oil which extends compressor life.

R-410a Cons: Is a blend of two refrigerants. Leaks must be repaired. It runs at approx. 60% higher pressure. Costs more than R-22. Uses polyester oil that attracts moisture, causing lubrication issues.

Mostly, it's a personal choice. R-22 will be around for some time, but will increase in price, and manufacturers are slowly phasing out R-22 equipment.
