"I feel like I'm finishing what he wanted us to finish," said Janice Brothers late Tuesday night, after the results of her race for the two-year unexpired term for County Commissioner District 3.
The special election was to replace the former holder of that district seat -- her husband, Roger Brothers -- who passed away in July after holding that seat for more than 30 years.
Janice was appointed to fill his position until the election, but now she has earned the right to stay there, with 940 votes to challenger Gale Barber's 718. The election won't be official until certified.
"I'm relieved and excited," said Janice from her home Tuesday night. "I'm very appreciative. Everyone has been so kind and so supportive.
"It's been a long pull," she added. "Not as long a pull as the presidential race, of course, but it's been long."
Janice said her husband's love for the county was so strong, she wanted to honor him by serving it.
"We'll do it for him and for the people," she said. "My family feels good about it -- we're doing what he wanted us to do. They tell me he's smiling in heaven right now."
