The remains of 26-year-old Randy Marbry of Scales Road were found Tuesday by officials who had been hunting for the man since the first of November.
Marbry went missing Oct. 31 following a trail ride he took that day with his mother along the banks of the Duck River near Halls Mill, according to Sheriff Randall Boyce.
Boyce said that Marbry was familiar with trail riding; however, the horse he was riding was not. The sheriff said that Marbry's mother heard her son take the horse down to the river, but she did not follow him.
Marbry's mother called for her son to come out of the river, but could not hear a response, although she could hear the horse splashing in the water, Boyce said.
Boyce said Marbry's mother returned home since she could still hear the horse trotting downstream and thought nothing of it when he didn't return that night, saying that in the past, Marbry had ridden off and would not return for several days.
"They (the family) didn't think that much about it," Boyce said.
However, on Nov. 2, deputies took a report from a person canoeing who found a horse standing in a shallow part of the Duck and the search began.
Boyce assumed that Marbry had taken the horse into deep water and said his remains were found on a gravel bar Tuesday afternoon. The sheriff said an extensive search had been conducted for the past two weeks, "using every means available," including a helicopter with surveillance equipment.
Boyce said that changes in the level and temperature of the river over the past few weeks due to rainfall made the search more difficult.
The sheriff praised Chief Mark Thomas and Volunteer Fire Services Inc., saying they were "relentless" in their search for Marbry. He also praised diving teams with Emergency Medical Services that worked the search.
"They used everything known to man for days out there," Boyce said of those who participated in the search. "They went way above and beyond the call of duty."

HorseGentler and hhhmmm,
I agree 100%!
votethemout,
You missed the point totally. I have no doubt that the people searching were doing everything within their means to find Mr. Marbry and they do deserve recognition and appreciation.
My first point is this. Had I or others known of this missing person, then I myself would have offered my free services to search on horseback along the river. I have participated in many such searchs over the years, but unless the public is notified, then others that might be willing to help will not have the chance to be of assistance.
The second point of concern is either with the reporter, the sheriff's department or both. In the story it makes no mention of an investigation of Mr. Marbry's past trail rides, when he is known to have been gone for several days. If a person does not go to someone elses house or have other means of survival, then how does that person survive being gone for several days. As I stated in my original post, I am not saying that foul play was involved, but an investigation should be done anytime someone disappears under such circumstances.
I am glad the family got closure, but I also feel the public should feel our law enforcement officials are doing what they are paid to do and not just give "attaboys" for doing part of the job.

Randy was ------and is------a good kid !!!
Don't judge him till you know him . BEWARE, Keep
an open mind, Keep an open eye -- But keep a
closed mouth.Investigations Continue.!!!!
HorseGentler there were several people involved in this matter and I don't think anyone was standing around. I bet you didn't know there were divers in the water for several hours until it was dark dogs were used also a helicopter I don't think all of this was used just for them to be patting each other on the back. I am sure that these people some who did this with no pay on their own time were desperately trying to find him alive. That was not the case. I am sure you would have done things different as you seem so quick to discredit everyone that tried to help find him. Why don't you have some peace that the family may at least know where he is now and maybe can get closure now due to the hard work of people from all over the mid state that took part in the search. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Actually I was wondering about a couple of things that the story does not mention.
TG story says :
"Boyce said Marbry's mother returned home since she could still hear the horse trotting downstream and thought nothing of it when he didn't return that night, saying that in the past, Marbry had ridden off and would not return for several days."
My question is this. When Mr Marbry went on these trips was there anywhere in particular that he went. Say for instance to a friend's house for a few days. If he does not go to someone elses house, then does he carry a tent, sleeping bag or provisions? The story does not say if he had any provisions or if the sheriffs department checked into any of these details. It seems that the law enforcement and rescue officials were pretty busy patting each other on the back for finally finding a body that was missing for several weeks. I am not trying to say that any foul play occured, but I think that an investigation should be done regardless in cases like these.
I also agree with darrick that it might have been beneficial to have notified the public that Mr. Marbry was missing. He could have been still alive and at someone elses place and not even known that people were looking for him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

being close to this situation, i can assure you that they were searching. the family and friends knew he was missing, and that's all that matters. it was no one else's business... i'm not trying to be rude, but this town is way too nosy. if it were your family, you wouldn't want to see and hear it everyday. the police were respectful in keeping the issue quiet.

Actually Randy was the father of my little cousin, so yes.. it would have been nice to know he was missing, so perhaps more people could HELP.. When has a missing persons' case every been kept a secret? Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of finding someone? Isn't going to happen if nobody knows he's missing.

hhhmmm,
That is EXACTLY my question... Very suspicious! They claim they used all of this state of the art equipment, however nobody in the community had a clue he was missing. That, certainly isn't state of the art.
The 'muddy duck'does not pick and choose. You go down with her and you go alone. I remember in the early fifties when The Duck took youth, young men just starting out, gone all too soon. Yet we swam there, dropped a rope from the highest limb, laid in the warm sunshine by the banks, dreaming of a life beyond Shelbyville.
Yes, I guess The Duck does pick and choose.
My heart goes out to this young man's family, most especially to his mom.
