State troopers and other law enforcement personnel had told county officials such a change would increase safety and reduce accidents, although troopers can't formally recommend the change because they are prohibited from engaging in political activity. It is the state which will make the final decision; the county can only pass a resolution asking the state to change the speed limit.
The rules committee recommended the resolution and placed it on the full county commisison's January agenda.
Bridge dedications
Meanwhile, the rules committee recommended naming one county bridge to commemorate a Civil War encampment, but withheld their recommendation in another case, with the chairman saying a famed Civil War general wasn't in Bedford County long enough to deserve his own bridge.
Phillip Gentry of Wartrace had suggested naming two bridges on State Route 269 in honor of Beechwood Plantation's role in the Civil War. One bridge would be named for Col. Andrew Erwin, the landowner who made his property available to Gen. William J. Hardee as a temporary headquarters. The other bridge would be named for Hardee.
In addition, commissioners Joe Tillett and J.D. "Bo" Wilson have asked that the Skull Camp Bridge on State Route 130 be named for the late banker and community leader Sydney "Bud" McGrew, who died earlier this year.
Rules committee members had no problem honoring Erwin, but chairman P.T. "Biff" Farrar said Hardee was only in the area for a few days and that a historical marker might be more appropriate than naming a bridge.
Farrar praised McGrew but also said the county needs to adopt a set of criteria for naming bridges. He noted that many bridges have been named for war heroes or members of the military.
The rules committee voted to place the Erwin proposal on the full commission agenda with recommendation, and the Hardee proposal on the full commission agenda without a recommendation. The committee also placed the McGrew proposal on the agenda, although it wasn't clear from the wording of the motion whether or not the committee added its recommendation.
As with the speed limit, the formal decision on renaming the bridges lies with the state, since all three sites are on state highways.
Zoning courtesy
The committee recommended passage of a model resolution suggested by Rutherford County. Rutherford County was caught unawares by zoning changes made by Davidson County to land right on the Davidson/Rutherford county line. Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess and the Rutherford County Commission have suggested that in the future, each county set a policy of notifying its neighbor when a zoning change is proposed for a site abutting the neighbor's county line.

No need to reduce the speed limit through there. If they'd just get the State to enforce the current speed limit things would be fine. There is a center turning lane over that stretch of highway at Deason. The wreck which took the man's life had nothing to do with speed.
Get rid of the curbs in Deason. Why (or shall I ask who) had them put in the first place? A state study stated that if a car hits those curbs it can make a car airborne. The curbs with a high rate of speed are a disaster waiting to happen. Remove the curbs and leave the speed at 65. No need to slow down there is nothing to see.
Leave the speed limit alone and enforce the laws as they are. Those driving 65 mph are not the ones creating safety hazards on 231 north. Those hazards are created by those driving recklessly, driving drunk or speed in excess of the posted limit. Apparently the troopers cannot enforce the laws of 65 mph, so what makes anyone believe they can enforce 55 mph? The 4 lane divided highway was engineered and built to handle 65 mph, so let's let the engineers set the speed and the troopers write the tickets and leave it at that.
As for State Troopers being prohibited from engaging in political activity, I would like to know when that started and more importantly when are they gonna enforce that?!
William
There's a speed limit?????? it wouldn't matter what limit is posted, people are driving as fast as they want to. the speed limit will be whatever is enforced. if you make it 30, then you need to make sure you have the personel to enforce it.otherwise , people will continue to drive 50 in the 30 , 55 in the 45 and 70 and above in the 65, texting, drinking, putting make up on, eating a bowl of cereal (yes i have seen it)and whatever else.
Whatever happended to Trooper D'Angelo Inman who used to camp out on 231 North?
Highway 231 speed limit does'nt bother me as being that! It is the 30 m.p.h. limit on N.Main. I have met police officers with traffic running 40 or more and they never even look. To me they could write 100 to 200 tickets in a days time easy. If you'r going to post a speed limit enforce it or don't post it. It's not just N.Main I have seen idiots all over the county! The city needs to let the officers start craking down on violaters and write some tickets. If the offenders have to start paying these 200 dollar or more fines maybe they will start paying attention. And before any one starts on me, yes I drive the speed limit. IT IS THE LAW. My 17 year old daughter just got a ticket for speeding. My advice as a parent was, "I guess you had better slow down and pay attention". Thank you trooper Chad McAnnally getting her where it hurts. Now I have noticed she is more aware of her speed and does pay more attention to her driving habits. Who cares what these traffic offenders think,if you are not one that speeds do'nt worry about it. To the ones that blatently dis obey the posted speed limits "hope you get a ticket". To the chief Austin Swing target these areas of high accident areas and let the officers write tickets or to the officers "GET TOUGH" lets see some police presence. For goodness sake take action!
I travel The Tullahoma Hwy atleast once a week Hwy 41 A South and I mention to my husband each time that we drive through there that long lines of people are bumper to bumper behind us because we are driving the speed limit. Then the idiots will pass on a double yellow line almost causing an accident and I NEVER see any law enforcement on that hwy. I might see a state tropper 1 time out of 25-30 times that Im on the stretch of road. I know of so many people that have been killed there and yes...the law is not enforcing the speed limit as they should. As for Hwy. 231...seems to me that most of the wrecks that have killed people were mostly in part to the ones pulling out from side roads into the path of cars traveling the hwy. If you dont open those portholes on the front of your face when you pull out onto a hwy. where cars are traveling 55-65 miles per hour then you better have good luck or an extra pair of clean underwear or better yet a good burial policy.
231 wa meant to be travelled at 65mph after passing through Christiana. The intent of the highway was to allow traffic to move efficiently. Slowing things down will disturb this efficiency. Same with red lights, so hopefully no one gets the bone-headed idea to put them up.
i agree. the speed limit on hwy 231 is fine. enforce that. the reasons there are accidents on hwy 231 is due to the fact that people pulling out off of the side roads wait till you are four to five car lengths from them and then they pull out. if accidents happen at 65 it is going to happen at 55 or 45 or 35. its not the speed. its the stupidity of the driver or drivers. another thing i agree on is the limit on north main. i have driven right beside a city officer on north main doing forty five, right beside him. he never looked up or over at me, just pulled right into the huddle house for some morning grub. do people not eat breakfast before going to work?? sorry, that was off topic. i agree also that there could be 100-200 tickets written daily on north main but who wants to do that other than the useless motorcycle cop, w.t.h?, why do we even have one of those, maybe he just wants to be cool or something, i dont know? is it true?, ive heard it helps city officers get promoted by the number of citations they write? well motorcycle mania should be the president of the F.O.P then. i wasnt aware peoples tint on their windows was even an issue anymore. ive seen him riding through parking lots looking at peoples cars and then pulling them over after they leave the place they were at....sorry for the rant, had to get it out!!
hey bo wilson and joe tillet....how about you to go crawl under a moving semi or something, maybe then my upset stomach and acid reflux will soon depart me?
I agree it's not the speed limit that needs to be changed,it's the drivers and their disrespect for others around them,I don't understand why a traffic light was not put up on 231 in front of the hospital either, when countless accidents happen there when people are trying to turn in to the hospital because of speeding, then maybe one will be put up.
IT'S THE SORRY ROADS,NOT 231 NORTH,THAT ARE NEVER WIDENED,OR STRAITENED THAT CAUSE THE DEATH WRECKS IN BEDFORD COUNTY.YOUR LEGISLATORS,TRACY,AND COBB HAVE DONE NOTHING TO GET FOUR LANE ROADS FOR BEDFORD COUNTY,AND THEY WON'T AS LONG AS WE ARE FOOLED INTO BELIEVING THAT THINGS LIKE 65 MPH SPEED IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ON 231 NORTH.LOWERING THE SPEED LIMIT ON 231NORTH ONLY TAKES THE FOCUS OFF THE PROBLEM:SORRY STATE ROADS IN OTHER PARTS OF BEDFORD COUNTY NEED TO BE BROUGHT UP TO 21ST CCNTURY STANDARDS.STOP TRYING TO FOOL US, Y'ALL LEGISLATORS AND COMMISSIONERS.FIX OUR ROADS FOR SAFE DRIVING.
I think it's stupid to go to 65 for a few miles and then back to 55 for a few miles and then back to 65 for a few miles....
I just set my cruise around 59.

He got a divorce and Toni took him to the cleaners. But she lost her connection and will know have to drive the speed limit.

That's hilarious.
it's not the 65 mph speed limit that causes the wrecks it's the people that run 40-50 mph in the 65 mph zone that causes the problems.
it's not the 65 mph speed limit that causes the wrecks it's the people that run 40-50 mph in the 65 mph zone that causes the problems.
I drive daily from m'boro to shelbyville to work. i do not support this at all. people just need to be more mindful.
I think drivers who don't travel this hwy daily are confused when it suddenly changes to 55 going thru Deason. I am not going to drive 65 for a few miles, then slow down for a few miles for apparently no reason, then speed up again, then slow down for Christiana--and if you go thru during school hours, you have to slow down to 15/25.
Can you say 'SPEED TRAP!'?
This is just the next phase of connecting Murfreesboro and Shelbyville city limits. Twenty miles of traffic lights...
Pretty soon, we'll have a seperate town called-North Shelbyville.
Believe it.

Serves that jerk off right! He was the biggest punk ever hired as a Trooper!
Chris P...Amen!!
Idiots going 45 in the left lane, cell phone talkers weaving all around...those are the real problems.
The entrance to the hospital is a hazard, but I don't think a red light is the solution either. Maybe they can take some of their taz break and make some better signs for directing traffic.
Think our roads are bad? Go to Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky. We have streets paved with gold compared to them. I think our roads are fine. You can't go 65 on back roads and you can't talk on a phone or get distracted.
The speed limit in that area of 231 should have never been 65 in the 1st place. Really it should be 45 from Wal-mart to Deason area. There is the chruch there and a Bank and Hospital and Car Dealership 55 to me is still too fast. They need a light at the Hospital and another one around the BP and 82 Highway also.
I really haven't seen that big a problem with any certain speed. People like me who prefer traveling the speed limit and lower should stay in the right lane. If you want to go 65 and over(which is speeding),then stay in the left lane.
What are the actual statistics for accidents? I haven't seen any.
I think reducing the speed limit on 231 defeats the purpose of widening that stretch of highway, in the first place.
The county needs to concentrate on enforcing the limits already in effect.
Just yesterday, I had one person pass me like I was sitting still (I was doing 65) and another pull out on front of me at about 30mph, causing me to have to throw on my brakes.
Teenage drivers that drive way beyond their immature capabilities...now there's a REAL problem! You take the average teenager, put he/she in a 3,500 pound automobile capable of speeds over 120 mph, and they IMMEDIATELY believe they have all the driving skills of Mario Andretti.
I am all for lower the speed limit on 231. 65 is not a safe speed with all the roads that intersect Hwy 231. It's not the people that are pulling out that causes the problem, it's those that are slowing down to turn off. I've seem many have to run off the side of the road to keep from going up someone's tailpipe.
The City of Shelbyville needs to clarify the city limits on 231. The airport business park and hospital area are in the city. It is my understanding that the Shelbyville Police Department is working the traffic accidents on 231 and the airport business park and hospital area. There is a conflict with the state and city on who has jurisdiction of the 231 hwy itself. I believe if the SPD had traffic enforcement authority of 231 all the way to Frank Martin Road the speed limits could be enforced more efficiently. It just stands to reason the Shelbyville Police has more officers to enforce the traffic laws than the Tennessee Highway Patrol

45 all the way to Deason??!!??.......You have got to be kidding!! Some people have to work for a living and adding 15 minutes to my commute is NOT something I'd be in favor of. Trust me, there would be far more wrecks at that speed then 65 from impatient drivers trying to get around you Granny's
"I've seem many have to run off the side of the road to keep from going up someone's tailpipe."
Then they are following too closely, which is also illegal. As soon as the front car's blinker comes on, the car behind should either start slowing down or move into the inside lane.
I refuse to go over 55-60 until after I get past Deason because I know I will have to slow down and I have seen too many people get tickets because it is a speed trap. I stay on the right except to pass.
Don't get in the right lane if you don't want to slow down and don't go through that area during school bus times or you will have to stop anyway.
If you want to risk getting a ticket speed on by me on the left and you can pay the 120+ to the govt.
As far as people slowing down to turn left, that goes on all the way to M'boro. Turn lanes would seem to be more appropriate for that.
FYI: Trooper D'Angelo Inman is now working Cannon county. Guess his rep caught up with him in Bedford so they assinged him to another area. They will just let anyone be a Tennessee State Troper I guess. He has more than 15 years and gets passed for promotion every time due to his poor performance evaluations.
