Harris girls nipped at the buzzer

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

It wasn't the post-holiday start Harris Middle anticipated as the Central Tennessee Conference leading Eaglettes lost their first league game of the season 34-31 to host Franklin County North on Monday night.

North's Elizabeth Preston nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the game-winning shot.

The Eaglettes posted a 44-35 win over North earlier in the season.

Harris had trouble taking care of the basketball and trailed 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and 18-17 at the half before taking a 24-22 lead into the final stanza.

Emily Mathis led North with 13 points, including 10 in the first quarter while Taylor Holmes added 10.

Monae' Leslie paced Harris with a dozen with Kailey Hornberger adding nine.

North 46, Harris 37 (B): It wasn't a win for the Eagles (1-10) but it was a much better performance the second time around as Harris lost by 21 points in their first game against North.

With the game even at 11-all at the end of the first quarter, North took control of the game and took a 24-14 advantage at halftime but the Eagles rallied to cut their deficit to 34-31 after three periods.

Robert Jordan led the winners with 16 points, followed by Martin Hill with 13.

Tyran Wilkerson and Jackson McAnally each netted 12 for the Eagles.

Harris travels to Bridgeforth Middle in Pulaski tonight.
