State powerhouse too much for Lady Feet

Wednesday, January 7, 2009
Webb girls fell with a crumbling defeat against Davidson Academy Tuesday night in a East/Middle Region match. The Lady Feet showed potential in the first quarter, inching their way to what could have been a contest, but quickly observed their journey to a 58-28 loss.

The Lady Bears (9-3, 1-0 East/Middle) got on the board early and pounded away slowly, until Webb (4-6, 0-1) began to chip awat at their deficit and ended the first stanza trailing 11-8.

"We were playing with them," Lady Feet coach Stanley Bean said. "They were pressing us and they were playing hard and we were matching the intensity."

After the first quarter, Webb did not slide into the same rhythm. Davidson Academy continued to take the rock to the hole and hold off the hosts' offense.

Maya Porter, who is a key defensive player on the team, was injured early in the second quarter and did not return. The Lady Feet barely held on and left the first half down 28-12.

The Lady Bears came out just as strong in the second half, scoring double digits in both stanzas. There was only one player in their lineup who did not add to the final score. H.B. Jones led the group with 15 points.

"(Davidson) is ranked eighth in the state out of all private schools," Bean said. "We felt pretty good about what we did. We made some mental errors here and there along the game."

Elizabeth Lawarence piloted Webb with 14 points. Quao notched 10 points on the board.

Webb stays home to match up in another region battle against St. Andrew's-Sewanee on Friday evening at 6.

"We'll know then where we've gotten to," Bean said. "I really think we can play with them."
