The clerk at a Madison Street convenience store didn't take too kindly to being robbed early Sunday, Shelbyville police said.

"Open the (cash) drawer, Pops. I don't want to have to cut you but I will," the knife-wielding suspect allegedly told clerk Frank Dickerson at the Kangaroo store at the Madison Street-Deery Street intersection.

Dickerson opened the cash register, then tried to slam the drawer on the suspect's hand and threw a can of beer, hitting him in the back of the head as he left, Officer Sam Jacobs said.

The suspect grabbed the money from the open drawer before the attempt to close it on his hand, Jacobs said. The amount of money taken was not revealed.

"The man came inside the store and went to the beer cooler," Jacobs said. "The suspect then came behind the counter and produced a 5-or-6-inch knife, silver blade with a wood handle, a lock back knife."

Police described the suspect as a white, stocky, clean-shaven male with short, light brown hair, standing about 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, wearing a hat, a black short-sleeved shirt with a white logo on the pocket, and blue jeans.

The man was last seen walking north on Deery Street, police said.

Officers said they swarmed the area within moments of being alerted by a silent alarm but were unsuccessful in finding the suspect.
