Video, tip help capture burglary subject

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

A video and a tip led to the arrest of a suspect in several vehicle burglaries in an eastern Shelbyville neighborhood, police said.

Dragus Montez Dixon, 18, Neeley Avenue, faces multiple charges, Detective Charles Merlo said.

"We had about four or five auto burglaries in the Hillcrest Drive area," Merlo said. "One of the victims bought a video camera after he had been burglarized several times. On March 8 (the suspect) was caught on video and could be seen running south.

"On March 12 he came back and saw a note left on the truck saying for him to bring back the items he had taken."

The person, who was again caught on video, left but came back and took the note, Merlo said.

Officers received information indicating Dixon may have been involved in the burglaries, Merlo said.

"We walked over to his apartment and he opened the door," Merlo said.

Two DVD players and an iPod Dixon is accused of stealing were recovered from the apartment by police.

Dixon faces four charges of burglary, three charges of theft of property and one charge each of attempted burglary and vandalism, Merlo said.

He is being held on $14,000 bond, Bedford County Jail records show.

One of the burglaries of which Dixon is accused occurred Friday, police said.

A resident of South Hillcrest Drive, a few blocks from the apartment complex in which Dixon lives, said a portable DVD player was taken from a vehicle at her residence. This was not the location at which the video camera was set up, police records indicate.

Unfriendly move

A women who asked to stay at a friend's Hoover Street apartment Thursday night took her friend's cellular phone and a chain bearing several keys as she left Friday and hasn't been seen since, police said.

Stolen purses

A purse accidentally left unattended on a table at McDonald's Restaurant inside Wal-Mart was taken Sunday.

The victim told police contents included $400 in food stamps, $110 cash, two wallets and home and vehicle keys.

A purse was stolen from a vehicle at the Goodwill store, Big Springs Shopping Center, about noon Saturday, police said.

Dragus Montez Dixon.

The punishment for open stealing should be caneing on the court house lawn. The crime rate would drop. Mr Dixon will be out and on his way to somemore of someone elses stuff. If he was made a example of in front of the whole community. He would think again about stealing and get a job.
