Director Mark Clanton said that in the four days the city held the clean-up, 133 loads of material were hauled away, as opposed to 86 loads during last year's event.
Clanton was not sure how many tons that equaled, but it represented 30 to 40 dumpster loads, he estimated.
"It was a tremendous amount of stuff we hauled off," he said.
But Clanton also said other people's trash turned into treasure for many Shelbyville residents.
A mention in the Times-Gazette about unusual or salvageable items being thrown out during previous clean-up events seems to have resulted "in people picking the stuff up at night before we got to it," Clanton said.
"It was like that," Clanton said. "There were people out picking the stuff up and it sort of helped us a little bit ...we would have had 150 loads instead of what we got."
The next city-wide clean up is scheduled for the week of Oct. 19-22.

Yeah, my neighbors too. It looks like a Haitian refugee camp.
