MURFREESBORO -- It was a classic battle between two proud schools when Cascade and Community hooked up in the second round of the District 9-A tournament Tuesday night in a pitching duel that required extra innings to decide.

The No. 1-seeded Champions sent Josh Brown, the reigning district MVP to the mound, while Community's Lance Paschal, a junior, took the hill in the biggest start of his young career.

Top-ranked Cascade advanced with a 3-2 win in nine innings, but the Vikings proved that they are closing what used to be a huge gap in the two programs with their gritty effort.

The Champs take on Eagleville (14-20) in the winners' bracket final at Middle Tennessee Christian today at 4.

Brown led off the third inning with a base hit for the Champs and Jared Carkuff worked his way on via a base on balls to move Brown into scoring position.

Tyler Bowen came through in the clutch with a base hit to plate the go-ahead run to make the score 1-0.

The score stood until the sixth when the Vikings struck for two runs when freshman Tyler Christian led off with a single through the left side.

Jacob Cowell laid down a bunt that resulted in a throwing error to tie the game, and scored moments later with an excellent piece of baserunning on a strikeout that forced Champion catcher Kyle Saylor to throw the batter out at first.

Cowell broke for the plate in a fine piece of timing to beat the relay throw back to Saylor, who could not make the tag in time to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead with Cascade down to just six outs.

Cascade (29-1-1) roared back to tie the game on a lead off single by Chase Nunley, who promptly stole second base. Kyle Mullins moved him over with a productive out and Saylor walked to place runners on the corners.

Paschal retired a hitter for the second out before disaster struck in the form of a wild pitch to allow Nunley to cross the plate and tie the game.

Brown and Paschal retired the side in the seventh.

Neither team could push a run across in the eighth inning despite each team getting a runner into scoring position.

Paschal retired the first batter he faced in the ninth via a strikeout before being relieved by Cody Pierce.

Jon Hill almost ended it with one swing of the bat when he hit the base of the wall in the deepest part of the ballpark for a double.

Brown grounded out to move Hill to third for the second out of the inning.

Carkuff then got the biggest hit of his young career with a solid walk-off single into left field on the first pitch he saw to end the game.

"We played tough," Community coach Josh Burrahm said. "I am real proud of our guys for the way that they came together in this tournament.

"We improved in every facet of the game week over week as the season progressed and no coach can ask for more."

Brown did not figure in the decision but gave his usual dominant performance on the bump for the Champions. He threw seven complete innings and gave up three hits and one earned run.

He struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

Paschal was equally outstanding for the Vikings with 8 1/3 innings. He gave up just four hits, struck out seven and walked four.

Middle Tennessee Christian 10, Community 0: There was no gas left in the tank for the heavy hearted Vikings who took the field less than an hour after their emotional loss to Cascade.

The Cougars scored in four of five innings to pick up the win while limiting the Vikings (10-15) to just one base hit off the bat of Christian to advance to the third round.

"We were just simply spent after the first game," Burrahm said. "That game took a lot out of us physically as well as mentally and we weren't prepared to play this game.

"I would like to say thanks to my seniors, Chris West, Jacob Cowell, Dustin White, Bronson Friedman and Kerry Breshears for their contributions to the program over the years.

"They have been good teammates and good citizens. We wish them the best of luck as they start a new phase of their lives."

Well I want to say WAY TO GO GUYS and to all the SENIORS even if you ended up riding the bench the whole Tournament last night you have been really great with this team and will be missed by all your peers. Keep up the good work in what ever your future holds for you all. Good thing Community is going to be at a differen building next year so maybe the new coach will kick butt and will be fair to all plays and they will all get playing time! Sad when you see these Seniors that have put their heart and soul into this sport and they sat the bench through the whole tournament last night. That was their last games to ever get to play with their school friends and their school again. Well Good luck boys and Good luck next year. Can't wait to see who the new coach will be.

our boys played their hearts out and at the end of the first game had no errors. the papers usually only report offensive efforts but the first two games of the tournament had the best defensive plays i have ever saw them play. this team showed what they are made of in the tournament. the last game i feel they were totally exhausted and let down because they came so close. our boys showed tough grit, infield and outfeilders making diving catches, lance taking a line drive in his side throwing the batter out at first, michael getting hit by the bat, all of them gave it their all. i am very proud of being a viking fan.

What a classic! This was very mindful of other great athletic contests played through out the years by Unionville and Cascade (Bell Buckle-Wartrace). This has been a great rivalry and appears to bring out the best in the players and coaches. Congratulations to both teams for your great efforts and good luck in the future.

Sounds like the coach is doing a pretty good job to me. He went 9 innings against the #1 team in the State. Some people are NEVER satisfied. Good job Coach Burrahm! Don't let the few disgruntled Mommas run you out of town!

Well my kid got to play in all 3 games. But if you were there and you seen all 3 games then you will know that the same kids played all 3 w/ the exception of one kid. Also he is the only coach that did not do a Senior night for his Seniors. So I am not a disgruntalled parent that their kid did not play any I am a disgruntalled parent for those boys that are not even mine but when your kids have been together since kindergarden you feel as those boys are yours. It is very heart breaking to see a boy that will never play ball again on those fields that has put so much hard work and time in to playing for Coach Burrham. It's a little to late as running him out of town. He is not leaving town he just will not be coaching the ball team anymore due to them being in a different facility. Good luck Josh in whatever you do next but just be fair to your kids! And remember you was there once yourself.

And also Coach didn't go 9 innings all those boys went 9 innings. They are the ones that put the time and sweat into the game. He is just on the side lines. I am not downing Josh by no means and don't take it as that as Josh Burrham as a person is one of the best people you will ever meet and i have known him for many years. I knew him when he kicked butt out there on that field. He just has so much on his plate that he a lot of times don't have time for his boys on that team.

I wish he would come to Shelbyville!! We need a coach that does not play politics. We had a freshman pinch run in our last district game that got pick off in the sixth. Yea this kid had not ran on varsity all year, I dont think thats the time to get experince. And we lost by one.
