Relay for Life preparations continue

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Twenty-two teams have signed up to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life walk to be held May 29 at the Bedford County Agriculture and Education Center.

"We have a couple of other teams that may come on," said organizer Wendy Stacy. "People can join any time. We hold sign-ups year round."

A golf tournament was canceled Monday due to inclement weather, and plans are being made now to reschedule, although no new date has been set. For more information on the golf tournament, call Phil Fisher at 580-3267 or Troy Stacy at 607-4413.

Another meeting will be held May 18 at 6 p.m., at the EMA Building in Shelbyville.

"Anyone who wants information can attend the meeting," Stacy said. "It is a planning meeting for the event."

Plans are well underway already for the event.

A survivor reception is being held at 6 p.m. event night.

"Any survivor is welcome to attend," she said.

Opening ceremonies, which will include a survivor lap, will be held at 6 p.m.

To raise funds for Relay for Life, a lawn mower pull will be held, along with games and plenty of food.

"We will also have a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m., to honor those who died from cancer," she said.

The event will continue until 6 a.m. May 30 with teams walking all night. Last year, the event raised more than $450 million.

The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fund-raising event. The overnight event remembers those who have lost their fight against cancer and honors those who survive.

For more information, call Wendy Stacy at 224-0888.
