Investigators with the Bedford County Sheriff's Department shut down another alleged methamphetamine lab on Monday -- this time in the small town of Wartrace.

Both suspects are also facing child endangerment charges for allegedly cooking the drug while a juvenile lived there.

Arrested were James Chadwick Carter, 37, of Shelbyville, and Tulane Kenna Maddox, 42, of Wartrace.

Carter is facing charges of possession of a schedule II controlled substance, initiation of a process intended to result in the manufacture of methamphetamine, aggravated child abuse/neglect/endangerment and violation of probation. He is being held in the Bedford County jail under $45,000 bond.

Maddox is charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance, promotion of methamphetamine manufacture and aggravated child abuse/neglect/endangerment and violation of probation. She is currently free on $75,000 bond.

Both are scheduled to appear in Bedford County General Sessions court on May 27.

According to a report by Detective Sgt. Scott Jones, he, Detective Sgt. David Sakich and Deputy Todd Hammond had gone to Post House apartments in Wartrace to serve a violation of probation warrant on Carter.

Making contact with Carter and Maddox, the officers said they could smell strong odors "that pertained to meth" and law enforcement asked Maddox's consent to search the residence and vehicles for any illegal contraband.

Maddox allowed the search and officers reported finding several substances "that are used in to manufacture methamphetamine." Maddox allegedly told officers that all of the substances belonged to Carter, who also lives with her in the apartment.

Approximately 1.5 grams of meth were found in the bedroom of a juvenile where Carter had been sleeping, the report read. Maddox also allegedly had approximately 0.6 grams of meth in two plastic bags on her person.

The matter of the juvenile living in the home was turned over to Capt. Becky Hord for investigation, and she filed the charges of aggravated child abuse/neglect/endangerment against both adults.

Meth precursors were also found in Maddox's van, "which was used in transporting meth back and forth to different cooking locations," the report read.

The van was seized along with Maddox's car, which she was in when officers first contacted her and allegedly found her in possession of a felony amount of meth.

Deputy Jimmy Rhodes assisted with the investigation and Wendell Norton of the Methamphetamine Task Force was called out to assist with removal of the substances and a hazardous material unit was also called to properly dispose of the items.

Here's another thumbs up to the BCSO and all the officers involved. Great job guys (and Becky) for a job well done! Thanks for all that you do.

But seriously I am glad that this filth has been found and hopefully taken care of. But the question I have is WHY did it take 3 officers to serve a violation of probation warrant on one man. I mean 2 Deputy Sgt's. and 1 deputy. And why didn't Wartrace's finest have something to do with the goings on (that was for Lamey and to respect my Southern heritage, lol).

Dang it I messed up but what should ya'll expect me typing with my redneck showing...I meant to say Watch it Lamey they are serving warrants for Dumb****s and your time is up!

This wasn't a "chance" finding. That is why there were 3 officers involved. Normally you don't ask to search cars and houses unless something has been found or someone snitched. Looks like a set up to me, but then I think they need to be set up. I bet the child goes back to the parent almost immediately.

Wonder if Misty Carter and James Carter are related? Maybe it was a family business.

remember...99% of the laws on the books are never enforced at all...

the ones that are enforced are the ones we hear about all the time...

You can bust every meth lab and meth user you can come up with and you will not even START to put a dent in the huge demand for meth. Meth addicts LOVE their meth and if you shut down the local labs then the Mexican mafia will simply increase the amount of meth it exports into the USA to meet the new demand. Methamphetamine should be legal. Mexico just legalized possession of small amounts of drugs. Switzerland reaffirmed its legal heroin system. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001. Legalizing meth would kill meth labs, meth houses and the meth mafia overnight. A group of 10,000 very serious policemen, prosecutors, attorneys and citizens have formed a group to legalize ALL drugs, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://leap.cc ) They see what happened when we legalized alcohol in 1932 as a good example of how drug legalization would work. They're sick of chasing drug users and sending innocent people to prison for decades just because they like to get high. This foolish war on drugs has lasted 37 years and cost us over a TRILLION dollars and we are not an inch closer to stopping drugs. Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com

LegalizeDrugs, I have no problem with the decriminalization of most drugs, but if you support legalizing all of them, I would hope that you would also advocate taxing them heavily and investing those funds into treatment and prevention, as opposed to other projects.

This drug is particularly nasty regarding the ease of addiction and subsequent relapse. It also tends to produce extreme psychotic episodes after even minimal usage. I just do not think this is a drug that qualifies as being justifiably legal to use under most conditions.

While I may agree Marijuana should be legal I just can not see legalizing the hardcore drugs such as meth or heroin. These drugs are so addicting that they destroy lives and families. They drain them of their finances and cause so much damage to the human body in a very short time. I just can not support making these drugs easy accessible to our youth.

Sure, why not ? If you can't beat em, join em... While we're at it, let's decriminalize kiddie porn, because you're never gonna stop all the pervs on the street.... and there's a bunch of rapists out there that don't seem to be learing their lesson, may as well nix that law. And I dont feel I'm being represented enough to justify my taxation level, so screw it, no check for you next April, Uncle Sam. And why can't I discharge my firearms in the city limits ? If you don't want to catch the bullet, well, you shouldn't have been in the way ! These laws really are cramping my style....

Obviously, this is quite tongue in cheek. Legalize Drugs, we as a society dont care how they do it in Mexico and Switzerland. If those nation's laws are more to your liking, you and James Chadwick Carter and Tulane Kenna Maddox are all free to travel there and enjoy their unrestricted access to all the narcotics you please. I welcome you to take advantage of the opportunity. But don't think I am going to allow you to cook that crap next door to me and you make me feel like I don't have the right to protest it. We, the straight and sober crowd, still are not the pushovers you think we are.

I am very shocked each and every time a child is involved to a a drug raid, the home address is listed. No matter if the person innocent or not. (YOU) THE SHELBYVILLE TIMES-GAZETTE, LOCAL TV NEWS.DRUG TASK FORCE AND LOCAL SHERIFF'S DEPT.SHOULD (PUT THE CHILD FIRST),NOT JUST TO GET TO BE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF NEWS PAPER, JUST FOR THE PAPER TO SELL MORE PAPERS FOR A LARGER PROFIT.THE CHILD HAS TO GO TO SCHOOL,PLAY SPORTS,AND BE IN THE PUBLIC EYE WITH ALL THIS.PEOPLE SHOULD NOT JUDGE A OTHER PERSON'S CHILD FOR THEIR PARENTS WRONG DOINGS, I DO NOT THINK ANY PARENT HAS RAISED A SAINT. WE ALL MAKE BAD CHOICES,YES EVEN THE ONES OF OF US THAT THINK WE RAISED THEIR CHILDREN PERFECT,NOT KNOWING ,MANY THING THEY HAVE DONE IN THE PAST AND IN THE FUTURE WITHOUT THEIR KNOWING UNTIL IT HAS HAPPEN IN THEIR ADULT LIFE. WE ALL WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CHILDREN CAUGHT IS THESE THINGS. FOR THEIR SAFETY AND WELL FARE I THINK WE COULD LEAVE OUT THE THE ADDRESS OF OF THE LOCATION. EVERY ONE KNOWS THE BCSD IS TRYING TO DO I GOOD JOB. I THINK THE CHILD NEEDS TO BE CARRIED OUT OF AWAY FROM SEEING THE PARENT BUT IN HAND CUFFS FOR TRANSPORT IN A PATROL CAR. ALL OF THE THINGS THEY SEE WILL STAY WITH THEM FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. THE SHELBVILLE TIMES NEEDS A BETTER WAY TO SCREEN WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CHILD INSTEAD OF PAPERS SALES. WHAT WE ALL SHOULD DO IS PRAY FOR ALL INVOLVED TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES AND LOVE AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN.THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.SOMETIMES FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD ,BUT MOST,THE DAMAGE IS DONE TO CHILD WHO HAS (DONE NOTHING WRONG ,THE CHILD AS ALL OF US ,DID NOT ASK TO BE BORN AND LIVE IN THIS CRUEL WORLD WITH PEOPLE WHO JUDGE NOTHING THEY KNOW BUT WHAT THEY READ IN THE NEWS.

papa, im confused about your comment. you say the t-g, sheriffs dept, and everybody should keep the address out of the paper. but dont u think as soon as the parents name hit the paper everybody in this small town will know if they had children or not and who they are.... i believe the children has been put FIRST. by taken them out of this horrible..horrible living condition they are being forced to live in....and i dont know a clear thinking adult that would judge a child for anything a parent has done... the bedford county sheriff dept. has done a wonderful job of finding these meth labs..

Hey while you are at legalizing everything why do we do it for prostitution, that way when I am visiting one of the many local establishments I won't have to worry about the law. It for sure is going on right here in town and no one does anything about it. Think of the tax money it would raise and maybe we would get a better class of workers and employee some Americans while you are at it. It is legal in most other countries why not here, maybe we could even get it approved for Medicaid/Medicare to go along with all the little blue pills tax payers are funding.

This just out rages me! LegalizeDrugs are you or do you have a family member that does this mess? I have and almost lost her. My sister was my best friend. We done everything together and never missed a beat until one day she start's dating a guy that is a drug head. My sister was gorgeous and a model for many years. She got messed up with this guy and on meth and went down hill from there. If she did not have the money she would steal, sell her self or whatever else she had to do to get it just because it is so addictive as are so many other drugs but Meth is a really bad drug and I sure hope they do not ever leagalize this mess. I have watched my parents who are christian's a preacher and never ever raised their kids in a house to be like this. I watched my parents along w/ me and my brothers live in hell worried if we would ever see our sister/daughter again or if when we got home from work or school we would have anything in our house because she would break in and steal stuff to pawn off. I have travel back and forth all around Mississippi, and other area's searching drug houses and neighborhoods to just find my best friend but could not. We finally found her or should I say GOD ALMIGHTY finally found her and brought her to the parking lot of our daddy's church during a revival and she is now saved again living right has gone through rehabs see's her 2 babies that my parents have got custody of. I am very proud of her and Thank God that he watched over her for all those month's as it was 3 years she was on that mess. Meth is not good as are any drugs but I seen her go from a 130 lbs beautiful girl to over 200 lbs sores all over her and not caring what she looked like or if she lived as long as she had her meth. So legalizedrugs until you have lived that and laid in your bed wondering when your phone rings if it's going to be to tell you that family memeber has been found in a crack house or whatever dead because they ODed on drugs I don't even want to see you comment on leagalizing drugs. I hope they bust everybody they can and maybe one day these people will get out there and get a real job and work like somebody!
