The annual Relay for Life, which is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event, will be held from 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Saturday at the Bedford County Agriculture and Education Center. Twenty-two teams have signed up for the event thus far, according to Wendy Stacy, co-chair.

"We would have liked to have more teams, but with the way the economy is, we are satisified," she said.

These teams will take turns walking on a track and camping out overnight, as a way to display their fight against cancer and help raise money to combat the disease. This event is held over a 12-hour period as a way to show everyone how tough it is for cancer patients as they are going through treatments, Stacy said.

The weather looks to be about perfect for the event, with clear skies in the forecast.

Several Relay for Life team fundraisers have been held in Bedford County throughout the year to benefit the American Cancer Society. Hee Haw & Howdy, which includes great music and is a guaranteed good time, was held in April and raised almost $13,000 for ACS. The Bob Parks Realty Relay for Life team golf tournament, held on May 18, raised about $2,500.

Last year, the total proceeds raised by Bedford County' Relay for Life were about $100,000, according to Stacy, who said she hopes to exceed that amount this year, and encourages folks to attend the event.

Nationally, the event raised more than $450 million last year.

"Come out and support the cause to find a cure for cancer, and to honor the survivors and remember those who have died," she said.

The Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated, according to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life website.

"The Relay for Life is held for everyone," Stacy said. "Not only those who have been treated for cancer, or who have seen a family member suffer, but also those who want to eliminate cancer."

The theme of this year's walk is "Through the Years -- 25 Years of Celebrating Hope."

A survivor reception is being held at 5 p.m. tonight.

"Any survivor is welcome to attend," Stacy said.

Opening ceremonies, which will include a survivor lap, will be held at 6 p.m., and the luminaria ceremony will begin at 9 p.m.

I encourage any and everyone to attend the Relay For Life event. This is a wonderful cause. I never really cared to do stuff like this but when I my granny got sick with cancer that changed my life forever. I lost my granny and papa with in 6 years of each other with the same cancer and I said I would never miss a Relay For Life ever again. This is wonderful thing and keep up all the good work you are doing Wendy!

The weather was perfect and the event was most enjoyable. We had purchased 2 luminary bags for my wife's family losses to cancer and my wife was able to do the survivors walk herself. My daughters and I got to escort her on the second round as "care-givers". A very good cause for a very nasty enemy to the human body. With today's medical break-throughs a person has a good chance to be a survivor if it's caught early. I thank the Lord everyday that my wife survived!
