Protruding legs lead police to theft suspect

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Two men were charged in connection with the attempted theft of a vehicle driveshaft early Friday at a Deery Street repair shop.

Officer Tory Moore, who had been notified of a "suspicious person," found "a set of legs protruding from underneath a Chevrolet Camaro," he said in his report.

The man, identified as Benjamin Ross Nichols, 21, Old Flat Creek Road, allegedly said he was "taking this driveshaft off," Moore said.

Nichols was charged with attempted theft and posted $2,500 bond, Bedford County Jail records indicate.

A text message from Kyle Benjamin Sims, 19, Hickory Drive, was sent to Nichols' cell phone while it was in police officers' hands, Moore said.

Officer Jerry Draine arrested Sims during a traffic stop moments later and charged him with criminal responsibility for conduct of another. Sims was released on $2,500 bond, police said.

Purse entered

The second incident within a week involving money taken from a lost purse occurred Friday at Wal-Mart, North Main Street.

The victim told Shelbyville police she'd left the purse in a shopping cart outside the store. A customer later told store loss prevention personnel she'd found the purse in the shoe department. A member of the victim's family told police $80 was missing from the purse.

A similar incident occurred earlier last week at Kroger, North Main Street, police said.

Has the stupid factor taken over?

Yes Sharon22...it has. and until the court system starts getting tougher on these idiots, it's only going to get worse. We have one judge out of three that seem to have a backbone. Apparently stature has nothing to do with it because the biggest ones seem to be the most afraid to do anything about it.
