Fake designer clothing confiscated from store

Tuesday, June 9, 2009
An estimated $40,000 in counterfeit designer clothing and jewelry was seized from a Cannon Boulevard business Thursday, according to the 17th Judicial District Drug Task Force.

Clothing, purses, sunglasses, watches, necklaces, belts and tennis shoes were on display at Unique Hair Salon, said DTF assistant director Timothy Miller.

DTF agents and deputies from the Bedford County Sheriff's Department initially seized 101 counterfeit DVD movies and games, Miller said. The salon's owner, Monsanto Cannon, allowed a search of the building and agreed to turn over the other items, Miller said.

"Counterfeiting and piracy is often perceived as an activity of the petty criminal trying to make a few dollars," DTF director Tim Lane said. "This is not the case. It is highly profitable and has strong links to organized criminal groups and terrorist organizations, often providing funding for criminal activities."

Traffic stop

A large amount of marijuana and cash was recovered during a traffic stop conducted by the DTF and Shelbyville Police Department on Wednesday, Miller said.

Approximately 3.5 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of about $3,500, and $374 in suspected illegal drug proceeds were recovered from a car driven by Michael A. Payne, of Nashville, according to Miller.

As part of the investigation, a "felony amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia" was seized from an apartment at Davis Estates, on Anthony Lane, Miller said. A 52-inch flat screen television, which had been reported stolen from Rent-A-Center, of Shelbyville, was found in the apartment, Miller reported.

Cocaine found

A search of the home of Dominique Brown, of Jonathan Court, on May 29 resulted in the seizure of approximately 80 grams of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $16,000, Detective Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said.

SPD detectives and DTF agents conducted the search, Miller said.

The DTF is comprised of officers from the Shelbyville and Lewisburg police departments and Bedford and Marshall County sheriff's departments.

Does this mean that we won't be seeing countryfolk toting designer bags at Walmart?

Why is it you can buy knock off Chanel jewelry (just to name one) in the malls, fake Ed Hardy sunglasses at a local store on the square (and not in a back room) and the same purses and clothes at the flea markets. What's the difference?

If they are so concerned with organized criminal groups and terrorists groups; then start investigating the illegals.

If I spend my hard earned money on a fake "Coach" purse then it is my choice; I don't seem to have a choice of my hard earned money being spent to keep up the illegals.

He is not hispanic or illegal, he is black, and a Licensed Barber. I am suprised he is being labeled as involved in "Terrorist Organizations", this is hurtful to him and his business. I do not see other people in the Times-Gazette who have done criminal activity being labeled as involved in "Terrorist Organizations". Very Shocking.

Monty has moved up in the world from selling crack and pot to fake handbags and clothes. Seems to be a big improvement to me.

HMMMMMMM?

where were the people from who were selling the bags?.

Evidently some of you did not see the TV reports on all these counterfeit products which are made in countries that use this as a front to smuggle illegal drugs from which the sale of these drugs go to fund terrorist organizations. The purses, sunglasses, etc. are only a means to get these items smuggled into the country. One of the major news channels did an indepth investigation on this industry. When you purchase these products you are condoning and encouraging illegal behavior in more than one way. People who are involved in this may receive the by-product and think it's an innocent way to make a few fast bucks, but a discerning eye can tell the difference in these "knock-offs" and so the air of sophistication one would expect from owning a "designer" bag is lost because the poor quality and workmanship is definitely noticeable.

thats a horrible vindictive thing to say ABOUT Monty Cannon, he is a terrorist and maybe involved in organized crime, i know this guys as well as a lot of other people in Shelbyville and thats simply not true. I don't understand the motive for saying just a plain out Lie!!

-- Posted by slingshot on Fri, Jun 12, 2009, at 9:33 AM

I think there motive was because he use to be a drug dealer they thought they would find something on him. Like they usually do once you have made a mistake. And then they were made to look like idiots when all they foun was some purses. All that man power wasted! So of course now they have to make it BIGGER than it really is!

MSK,

I am with you on that theory. What did the warrant say? It was to find drugs, not dvds.

This person apparently has done some fishy things in his life, and selling a fake knockoff product is illegal. Why could this person not buy the real namebrand stuff and sell it. He evidently had some money invested in his business. He is probably used to living a life of crime, and taking the easy way out. Maybe if he tried to run a successful business with nothing illegal going on in his life he may have a huge success. A little hard work and honesty will get you a lot futher than sitting in a jail cell.

well it just goes to show how the police lie. every day things are uncovered about the spd and thier untruthes. when are the people in shelbyville going to stand up and do something about these guys. if the chife can not control his men then its time to ask for a new chife, if the city officals can not do that then its time to remove them in the next election. chife swing get that yellow out of your back and run your dept by the law, yes you and your men have to follow the law as well

He is not hispanic or illegal, he is black, and a Licensed Barber. Ok, I stand corrected. I know this man he has cut my hair in the past. This economy is having persons do things I can only guess or try too understand the persons who are involved. China is the Main culprit in knockoffs of licensed goods. I imagine this is the end of his barber shop. I feel empathy for him and not for the persons who talked him into selling these knockoff goods. but go too any flea market. It is no better.
