Driver of wrecked truck says he was high on meth

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

The driver of a tractor-trailer, which was found unoccupied in a ditch on Harts Chapel Road on Saturday afternoon, was under the influence of methamphetamines at the time of the crash, Shelbyville police said.

Billy R. Plummer, of Elkins, Ky., told Accident Investigator Matt Griffy he had been taking meth for three to four months.

Plummer showed up at Heritage Medical Center's emergency room "incoherent," without identification and saying he had been in an accident, HMC personnel told police.

Police charged Plummer with first offense DUI.

Thefts

* Lortabs and a money order were stolen June 6 from a safe at Shelbyville's homeless shelter, police were told.

Dr. Carl Bailey, an advocate for the homeless who oversees the shelter, told police Friday the medication belongs to a resident and the money order to a former resident.

* A guitar, three guns and jewelry were stolen from a Rippy Ridge home Friday, the Bedford County Sheriff's Department reports.

The home was entered between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. through the back door, the report indicates.

The guitar is a Peavey with a sunburst finish and the guns are a black Beretta 9 mm handgun, a Remington .22-caliber rifle with wood stock and a Remington .410-gauge single shot shotgun with damage to the forestock, the owner said.

Also taken were a Remington pocket knife and a 10-karat gold ring with 2-carat diamond cluster, the BCSD was told.

A foot impression from a size 9 or 10 shoe, which the homeowner feels belonged to an intruder, was discovered in a bed of loose landscaping rocks, according to the report.

* A mountain bike was taken from the yard of a Lipscomb Street home over the weekend, a Shelbyville police report indicates.

The bike is red with white and silver markings, police said.

* Mail has been stolen for several straight days from a mailbox at a Tremont Drive residence, police were told.

The resident told police the post office had confirmed mail was delivered.

Neighbors said they had seen children around mailboxes on the street at delivery time, police said.

Scam watch

A Shelbyville woman almost became the victim of a scam, police say.

The victim told police she had been contacted by someone identifying herself as "Denise Hunter, with Financial Services" and claiming she could save money by re-financing the cards.

Because the offer sounded legitimate, the victim said, she gave the caller all information on three credit cards plus her Social Security number.

The victim told police she later found the call was not legitimate and cancelled all the cards.

As of the time of the report, the victim said she had not lost any money and was unaware of any use of the Social Security number.

A 1-888 number the victim was told to call is being used nationwide in attempts to steal credit card numbers, according to complaints received at the website 800notes.com.

Lamey,

You should show a little more empathy here.

I'm sure her decision to go through her young adult life drunk is a direct response to her personal or economic situation.

Shame on you!

Not guilty by reason of insanity! Insanity - doing the same dumb thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. Or maybe 19 is just a tiny bit past the legal age to learn.

Commenting on the demise of others to make you feel better is pathetic.

high on meth driving a truck? this has been a debate for years because everybody wants to always blame the other cars on the highway for tractor trailer problems, when alll along there are some drivers out there driving trucks who are tired from sleep, under the influence or other drugs. im glad to see this situation brought out because I have seen numerous accidents from truck drivers under the influence of something and almost killing people.

It is sad that he was high on meth or any other drug for that matter.Yes there are some bad truck drivers but there are alot of good ones as well.Any truck driver that cares about his CDL and their job will watch what he or she does. But to just blame truck drivers is crap. There is just as many people that get behind a car or motorcycle that are just as bad.I drive a pick-up and I know better and yes my husband is a owner-operator/truck driver and he knows better. It is the choices a person makes to do right or wrong. Not just a truck-driver.
